As part of the Hilton Top Solicitors Female Virtual Internship Program, I had an insightful session yesterday on the topic:INTRODUCTION TO SUSTAINABILITY PRODUCT MANAGEMENT IN THE DIGITAL ECONOMY, which provided a deeper understanding of the phases of product management and how it influences tech-driven industries. Here are my key learnings: Products come in many forms,physical or digital but at the core, a product is something that solves a problem. Mobile apps, for instance, are excellent examples of digital products we interact with daily. ◾The Role of a Product Manager◾ A product manager is responsible for managing the product lifecycle from scope definition to revenue projection, while coordinating with teams to deliver value. Six Phases of Product Management: ✅Research Phase: Market analysis and competitor research is done here. ✅Planning Phase: Here,you Collaborate with UI/UX designers to visualize the product. ✅Building Phase: This is the testing and refining the product stage (for instance, the continuous updates we see on WhatsApp). ✅Release Phase: Here,the product is introduced to the market (also known as the Go-to-Market phase). ✅Refinement Phase: Optimizing the product based on customer feedback and performance. ✅Retirement Phase: Where features that are no longer serving the product's goals are phased out or retired. ◾ Innovation vs. Iteration◾ I learned that product innovation involves creating new, transformative features, while product iteration focuses on improving existing features, similar to the updates we frequently see on popular apps. ◾Sustainable Product Management◾ Product managers must be mindful of economic, social, and environmental goals, incorporating sustainability into tech products by reducing energy consumption and optimizing data storage, as demonstrated in an example of Chowdeck. Lastly, I also got a thorough understanding of the stages involved in creating a product, from concept design to post-market monitoring. Special thanks to Deborah Enyone Oni (LLB. BL. LLM. 🧵A thread: The Internship that unveiled the Product Manager inside me 🚀 This summer was special. “We’re going to expect you to operate like a real Product Manager, and not an intern” is what my hiring manager said on the first day of my three-month PM internship. With those words in mind, my task was to enhance our product-led growth (PLG) strategy. I knew the key was making Pluto’s user journey—from sign-up to first transaction—not just smooth, but intuitive and valuable. It took plenty of brainstorming, user research, and iteration to ensure users not only had a frictionless onboarding experience but felt confident enough to invite their teams. By the end, I saw firsthand how a well-executed product experience drives user acquisition and retention. It was a hands-on crash course in creating growth, and I couldn’t have asked for a better team to work alongside. Excited to take these lessons forward as I keep building my career in Product Management! OMG! I just started my 3rd internship at Microsoft! 🥳 It’s week 2 of my journey as a returning Product Manager Intern on the Viva Engage team, and I’ve already learned sooo much :) Here are 3 essential things you MUST do when you start your internship: ✅ Get to know your team as much as possible! Ask for 1:1s with PMs, SWEs, Designers, and others you’ll be working with! Learn about their journey, what they’re currently working on, and feedback they have for your project. ✅ Create a “Brag Book” to document your journey. Make a document where you write down everything you achieved for the day, your progress, feedback from your team, and more! This will come in super handy when discussing your performance with your manager. ✅ Familiarize yourself with the product you’re working on. It’s so important to experiment with the product that you’ll be working with. Explore its different features and write about any pros/cons of your experiences with it as a user. 🎀 P.S. Interning As A Product Manager: Exploring New Concepts ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- During my time as a sales support in the Agency, Channels, and Distribution Team, I wore many hats and had a lot to learn. I had the opportunity to attend partnership meetings, where I first heard the term "API" mentioned. While I maintained my composure during the meeting, I swung to the internet and engaged Gideon Anumba shortly after to reiterate what I think my knowledge of it was. Fast forward to my product management internship, I have been introduced to new concepts (I will write on them later). I was super excited when our lead product manager took us through API documentation, first teaching and assigning practical tasks. Although it took time to grasp and my attempt didn't yield perfect results, I'm glad I tried something new and now have the chance to further explore and deepen my understanding of API.  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------This is to bring you on my new learning experience and how I am determined to go the extra mile to dig deeper into new concepts I am being introduced to during my internship opportunity. Consider the story of Sarah, a marketing specialist who wanted to transition into product management. She enrolled in a product management course and, after finishing the course, took an internship where she managed the lifecycle of a small internal tool used by her company’s sales team. Sarah collaborated with software developers to improve the tool, gathered user feedback from the sales team, and made iterative updates based on that feedback. Her hands-on experience in managing this tool’s lifecycle helped her transition into a full-time product management role, where she now leads major product initiatives. I am proud to announce that I have recently finished an internship with Expedia Group as a Product Management Intern! During the summer, I worked on Expedia's Traveler and Partner Service Platform, focusing on enhancing Vrbo's servicing model for B2B travelers. My responsibilities included gathering requirements, defining functionality, and setting actionable goals for the product. I also leveraged user feedback in all forms to make better decisions and drive meaningful outcomes for the business. Through this, I identified servicing bottlenecks and factors that hindered our existing solution, and defined and validated a solution that unblocks Vrbo's servicing model at scale. This summer has been a journey of learning and overcoming obstacles! I’d like to share some of my most significant realizations that I think are vital for anyone's career progression: 1. Be proactive! Take the initiative to expose yourself to new problems, people, and teams. This approach not only broadens your skill set but also expands your network, opening doors to unexpected opportunities and insights that can propel your career forward. 2. Keep learning: I find myself resonating with this quote from Deborah Liu, “Someone who is always learning is always going to exceed someone who’s the expert today”. Now more than ever, embracing a growth mindset and continuously applying and updating your knowledge ensures you remain adaptable and valuable in any role or industry. 3. Focus on impact: Always consider how your work contributes to the bigger picture and strive to deliver meaningful results for your users and the business. Being aligned with broader goals and prioritizing high-impact projects allows you not only drive significant value but also position yourself as a key contributor within your organization.
