Filtering through all the hype, one thing is still abundantly clear: out of the gate, companies aren't yet willing to pay the high prices for AI. And the actual use cases are still limited to mundane tasks like summarizing and searching. The anxiety about the impact of wrong information or hallucinating in customer-facing conditions is limiting usage to internal operations and support in call centers, for example. The next several years will see its usage focused on productivity enhancement in workflows. But it has to get more affordable before companies go deeper.

“Mundane” searching and summarizing hundreds of thousands or millions of records is still a major use case. Much like financial services firms were ages ahead of others in using mainframes and desktop computers in the 70s-80s, the value for AI may spread similarly — a different pattern than consumer-facing tech spurring change in the past 24 years. But, given exponential curves associated with AI power, I don’t think there’ll be much of a wait. Companies who possess and regularly need to engage with mountains of data seem willing to pay, and have already been on the path to AI via earlier forms of machine learning. When it’s still cheaper to pay a legion of call center reps in Asia to field inquiries almost like human robots, the switching value for customer service may not be justified. And for physical retail businesses (like Starbucks) whose operations have been routinized and supply chains optimized from tip to tail, the benefits may not *yet* be compelling.
