Point, game, match. 🏓 We’re presenting the first AI-powered robot to achieve amateur human-level performance in table tennis. 🤖 Here’s how we built it: 🔵 The sport has served as a benchmark for robotics research since the 1980s. The system has to be good at low level skills, such as returning the ball, as well as high level skills, like strategizing and long-term planning to achieve a goal. 🔵 To train the robot, we gathered a dataset of initial table tennis ball states - which included information about position, speed, and spin. 🔵 The robot went up against 29 human opponents it had never played before across 4️⃣ different skill levels during our research - from beginner to advanced - with it scoring in the middle. This implies it can operate like an intermediate amateur. 🔵 While this work focuses on table tennis, it shows how robots can learn to perform complex tasks in the real world that require physical skill, perception as well as strategic decision-making. Congratulations to the first graduates from the AI for Science Master’s program at AIMS South Africa 🎓 Last year, we supported AIMS with funding to provide full scholarships, equipment and compute to students, giving them access to advanced studies in mathematics, AI and machine learning from world-class academics at AIMS South Africa. They also receive 1:1 mentoring and support from Google DeepMind researchers and engineers.
