I admit that I've been one of those #GenAI idealists that expects it to usher in a new wave of productivity, but this article from MIT Technology Review made me stop and think. The innovation of the smart phone era – putting hugely powerful connected devices in everyone's hands – drove absolutely no real productivity growth because most of the applications ended up focusing on entertainment and social media. We risk going down the same route with the current crop of foundation models because their training data comes from the cat memes and dancing videos of the internet. In order for GenAI to fuel GDP growth, models must be built for engineering, manufacturing and other business-specific use cases.
