Today we discovered online a superb interview with critic Harold Bloom about Ralph Waldo Emerson: He talked Emerson and power, Emerson and Whitman, Emerson and jazz. Just after this, we spoke with a friend about hypocrisy, how certain politicians denounce one thing and then a minute later do the thing they complained about. We agreed that there is a sickening pragmatism at work here. We considered Emerson: “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines. With consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do." We then looked closely at Emerson’s words and noticed the importance of the judgmental word “foolish” and the mocking word “little.” Consistency wasn’t the problem: foolishness was. A great leader regularly considered one’s traditions or consistencies to see which ones were wise (and should be continued) and which ones were foolish (which should be suspended). A principled person CHANGES when confronted with a foolish consistency. What do you think of this idea? Do you regularly inventory your consistencies to see how foolish they are? “Fail fast,” they say. “Fail often,” they say. “Fail early,” they also say. But how the heck does that actually work in real life, where you work, have bills, a life, basically a lot on the line? When your livelihood or relationships are on the line? I was reading this article from Inc. Magazine on failing the right way, thinking through how that works individually. (https://lnkd.in/etmYUjef) Here’s my summary: Be humble when you mess it up. Admit the mistake, tell people how you’ll correct or learn from it, and do better in the future. Be curious. Ask questions to your boss, your team, your peers, your stakeholders… get curious about what they really want/need/expect. And then act on that. Be resilient, and don’t give up. Seriously, learn to master the “30 min Pity Party” (trademark pending), sort it out and move forward. (Also, I’m a fan of the 24-72 hour personal wandering through the desolation desert. Highly do not recommend.) As I write this and reflect, two adages come to mind: “Done is better than perfect.” And “Perfectionism is living in fear.” Is perfect getting in the way? Maybe. It is if you’re learning to fail, so embrace the fail by failing at perfect.
