CEO | Former Government Advisor to the Prime Minister’s Office | TEDx Speaker | Sales and Leadership Enabler | People and Culture | Logistics and Supply Chain | Honorary Professor | Advisory |
This was my office around 2015. An office that witnessed hundreds of stories and memories. I used to have a top floor corner office with a nice view and I decided to replace it by a ground floor smaller office to be close to the people who come in and out, especially the sales. Having a ground office means every one coming in the morning will pass by for a hello since I always believed in an open door policy leadership and the friendly Gwen who was my best Personal Assistant was sitting outside and never to act as a gate keeper for people to enter, the password to enter was : Is Hussein here or is Hussein in a meeting ? If yes then they will come back later and if no then they can bump in with no barriers at all. Being close to the building entrance means the sales people will pass by me on their way out to their sales visits to excite me of their planned productive field visits and they pass by me again when back from their visits to share with me their achievements and productive outcomes with passion and it was their choice and never a mandate. We used to joke all together that I took this office purposely to see what time people come and go but this was never the situation because I never believed in attendance punching, it was all based on self discipline and trust. If you are a curious person and like to get into details you will certainly zoom in the picture and see many things and the top three things for me are the below: 1- The pc wallpaper was a design of a dream facility which we built before I left. 2- My trophies and certificates gathered on a chair to be packed in boxes since it was my last few days with the team before I left. 3- A big thick folder which I never fancied because it was the old way of signing hundreds of papers every morning one by one which was very time consuming and today it got replaced by system approvals with modern technologies that can be done in few minutes. An open door policy is the best privilege you can ever provide to your people as a leader while trusting that rarely people will abuse it and even if they do it will be either for their own good or for the good of the business. An open door policy can make wonders as long as you know how to balance it.
