Can theater help prevent violence in schools? $600,000 federal grant fuels Sacramento-area program to help kids tap into empathy, emotional learning and healing. “Though it may seem surprising to consider theater education as a means of preventing violence,” said William Braniff, director of the Department of Homeland Security Center for Prevention Programs and Partnerships, in a statement, “this creative, multidisciplinary strategy utilizing theater arts to teach conflict resolution skills effectively tackles the underlying systemic issues that contribute to violence, all while enhancing the safety and resilience of local communities.” https://lnkd.in/gK46Gz5J

I haven't posted in a while, but I thought this might be a good to start, and share my thoughts on justice. I recently watched Theatre of Violence. During and after watching this movie, a fundamental question that has bothered me for a while came to mind: What is justice? And does it apply equally in every aspect of every society? The subjectivity of justice forces us to confront an uncomfortable reality: those who do not bear the burden of victimizing acts often view the direct consequences from a moral high ground. The movie raises a profound statement: “We are dealing with a peasant, pre-industrial society with judges and juries who belong to an industrialized society.” This contrast in itself begs the question: can justice be truly impartial when the systems enforcing it are shaped by contexts and values alien to the accused? This question extends far beyond Dominic Ongwen’s story. Think of ongoing crises around the world—from the enduring conflict in Sudan and the humanitarian disasters in Afghanistan, to the ongoing war in Ukraine and Palestine, and countless other regions grappling with violence and oppression. In each of these situations, justice is a complex and contested concept, shaped by cultural, political, and historical contexts and the lens through which we perceive justice. The International Criminal Court (ICC), for all it stands for, reflects this tension, and what it claims to do and what it actually achieves can feel worlds apart. I believe that the ICC, like many other international bodies, is a necessity. But necessity does not always equate to being unequivocally right. Perhaps my skepticism stems from my exposure to a Western-centric media that disproportionately highlights certain atrocities on trial, while atrocities carried out by those in positions of global power often escape similar scrutiny. However, to me, this shows the skewed nature of international justice. Power dynamics and representation matter; and in recent years justice too often feels contingent on who holds the power to define it. Too often, justice, as enacted by international bodies, seems to falter when applied to underrepresented countries or those with less global influence, showing the power dynamic of “perceived justice,” which is inherently flawed. It is a sad reality that has played out time and again, reinforcing systemic inequities rather than resolving them. That said, my critique of international justice systems does not imply that wrongdoers should escape accountability. However, those who hold others accountable must do so without moral superiority or the illusion of impartiality. Because time and time again, the symptoms of conflict are addressed while shying away from the root causes, and because of this, perceived justice, shaped by biases and unequal power dynamics, cannot truly embody the ideal of justice itself. What are your thoughts? Is justice ever truly fair? Trailer can be found here: https://lnkd.in/erxkpJkz
