Outstanding! This gracious and generous support is essential for advancing research that continues to improve the effectiveness of blood stem cell treatments. Improving the use of scarce blood stem cells is an area of research in particular need of greater effort. It is not widely known that sometimes these precious donations also have too few stem cells. Twelve to 18% of children who receive cord blood transplants do not have good outcomes, because unbeknown to their doctors, their transplants had too few stem cells. Even in highly effective adult blood stem cell transplant therapy, depending on the transplant center, 5-27% of initial treatments are insufficient, requiring that donors return for more intensive and harsher stem cell collections. Research to provide an accurate differential count for the critical stem cells in treatments would reduce or prevent these persistent devastating treatment failures. Knowing the differential stem cell count of scarce treatment samples might also allow some of them to be used to treat more than one patient, which would reduce the donor scarcity problem even further. asymmetrex.com

This month, I’m not only celebrating Celiac Awareness Month, but Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month as well. While I do not suffer from CF, I nonetheless have a personal connection to it.  One of my daughters’ friends tragically passed away from the condition in her 20s. Whereas dying at such a young age used to be an inevitability, today, babies with CF are predicted to have a median life expectancy of 65 years. This feat was in large part made possible because of CF Foundation President/CEO (and Beyond Celiac board member emeritus!) Bob Beall’s decision to pursue a venture philanthropy model, harnessing the support of donors to bring life-changing pharmaceuticals to market. Dr. Beall’s and CF's success in this endeavor has served as a blueprint for our own venture philanthropy fund, Beyond Celiac Investments. We need more shots on goal! He’s majoring in Radio-Television-Film and serves as the Philanthropy Chair for Texas ZBT. Keep reading to learn more about David’s involvement with B+ and dedication to the fight against childhood cancer 🎗️ Q: What inspired you to get involved with B+? A: So many people in my life have been impacted by cancer so there is truly no organization I would rather partner with than one that feels close to home. I love the mission behind everything that B+ does and I could not be more grateful to be a part of it. ⭐ Q: What is your best fundraising tip? A: One of the best fundraising tips I could offer is to know the facts. Many people ask for donations in a general manner as opposed to knowing exactly what they are fundraising for. I always like to tell people to explain what it is exactly that they are fundraising for and why exactly they want to fundraise. ⭐ Q: What is the greatest lesson you've learned from your involvement with B+? A: The greatest lesson I have learned with my involvement with B+ is to be there for everyone. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and different experiences so it’s always best to look out for everyone and help those around you. ⭐ Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to get more involved with B+? A: I would tell people to just do it. There’s no harm in helping others and knowing that you can make an impact in someone else’s life. It is one of the greatest things you can offer someone.
