A next publication in the context of my PhD trajectory. According to current literature and (inter)national guidelines, radiography should always be recommended, to differentiate between an osseous mallet injury and a tendinous one and assessment of volar subluxation of the distal phalanx. We assume that the standard request for radiographs by general practitioners in patients with mallet fingers should be reconsidered. The purpose of requesting radiographs should not be to distinguish between a tendinogenic or osseous mallet finger, but to assess whether there is a possible indication for surgery. Future research should investigate the added value of imaging in all patients with a MF in primary care, given the low number of patients that underwent surgery.
