My name is Sharmila Roy Chowdhury, and I'm a surgical oncologist at Goshen Center for Cancer Care. The focus of my practice is taking care of GI cancer patients. Goshen Center for Cancer Care is a very unique community cancer center where we have a multidisciplinary approach to every patient. So when we first see a new patient with a GI cancer, they are always discussed at our weekly multidisciplinary team onboard. The pathology slides and all their CT scans, Pet scans, etc. are reviewed as a team. The people present at these team onboards are the medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgical oncologist, pathologist, radiologist, interventional radiology, and the gastroenterologist. So we all put our heads together and review everything and come up with a plan for the patient. A big focus of my practice here at Goshen Center for Cancer Care is taking care of peritoneal carcinoma to assist cancer patients using HIPEC. HIPEC is heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy, but what we need to understand is that it's not used in isolation, it's used in combination with surgical removal of the tumors. The rationale for using HIPEC is you're putting the chemotherapy where the cancer is. And, the rationale behind using heat is that heat actually increases the penetration of chemotherapy into the cancer cells. So it makes it more effective. And the third, rationale behind this treatment is that we are able to use higher doses of chemotherapy than what we could get through the IV. We use HIPEC to treat, some GI cancers like appendix cancer and colorectal cancers. Among the GI cancers, Appendix cancer is, one of the cancers that has very limited, systemic treatment options. So for those patients to get any kind of survival benefit or even achieve a cure, they have to undergo surgery and HIPEC. Referring a patient to another physician is a big decision: You want to make sure that the patient is going to be well taken care of. And, both the patient and the family will be treated with respect. Here at Goshen Center for Cancer Care, we focus on the patient as a whole. And, we will treat them as family, and we will keep you updated throughout the process.

Did you know that current preventative health guidelines recommend regular colorectal cancer screenings at age 45? Does anyone like to talk, think about, or look forward to their first colonoscopy? Absolutely not, because it's kind of gross and uncomfortable. It's not really how I'd prefer to spend my day. But discomfort is way better than #cancer.
