‘23 for a lot of us was a transformative year. By transformative, I mean a shit show. Many industries, especially Biotech, saw layoffs galore. Maybe it is a sign that the VC well has finally run dry? Will Cambridge, Watertown, and the Boston Seaport only see 4 new microbiome companies vs the 13 that were started last year? All speculation aside, I did what anyone without a steady source of income would do, I decided to stop purposely bombing interviews at these depressing and antiquated service providers and throw my hat in the ring to become a consultant. I’ve had a lot of time to think about this… No, seriously. I may have worked for about 4 months in ‘23 and it opened my eyes to how bad the Managed Service Provider (MSP) business model is. It is not designed for emerging companies to be successful without an IT department. This isn’t just my observation. This feedback is from real companies with real people wearing multiple hats busting their asses to keep their teams running smoothly. They are sick of technology that doesn’t work and paying a monthly bill that buys them mediocre support. They are afraid to engage with their provider and they are handcuffed for the next year with a contract and SLA that only helps the MSP. So if you are fortunate enough, this model does work if you have an IT department, a healthy budget, and a leadership team that doesn’t care how long you have to wait to get your password reset so you can edit that validation SOP. I wanted to make sure you were aware of the typical MSP use case. Also, let me be clear about this, this isn’t an indictment of the providers and companies I have worked for or with. I see a lot of organizations that try to grow their people, taking good care of them financially, and providing them with a forever home. Their actions and intent speak for themselves. This model they operate with unfortunately has its flaws. I’m rambling as I tend to do.
