Recruiter: "So, about Joe Bloggs? Are we proceeding to make an offer?"
Hiring Manager: "I don't think we will. They have fifteen years of experience and never moved up in their career. I just don't think they're motivated enough."
You are probably thinking, "That seems fair enough?" Right? Wrong!
When it comes to hiring in 2024, not everyone wants to go up the ladder, but common society tells us that the only way to progress in life is to consistently go up the chain of command.
Let's be honest, moving up in a career is good but also comes with added responsibilities.
Not everyone wants to take on "extra responsibilities" because we know what happens:
→ more stress,
→ more workload,
→ more people to potentially manage, etc.
If you think someone is not successful or good enough because they haven't gone up in their career, it's a so-called "red flag." It's not. They probably didn't want to, and this doesn't discount the actual skills they bring to the table.
We shouldn't be passing on people who hit the mark but haven't got a shiny title; not everyone wants that in life.
Years of experience matter more than titles; some choose expertise over climbing the ladder.
