As I delved into the 2023 Deeptech Report, a few critical insights stood out, highlighting the immense potential and the challenges faced by the European Deeptech sector. 1. Strength in Research, Gap in Entrepreneurship: Europe's universities are bastions of research excellence. However, the translation of this research into entrepreneurial ventures remains limited 2. Funding Challenges: European-based Deep Tech companies have historically struggled to secure growth funding, a trend that is gradually changing but still presents a significant hurdle 3. Equity Burden: Comparatively, Europe faces a higher equity burden than its counterparts, affecting the way startups scale and operate 4. Regulatory Hurdles: The extensive regulatory framework in the EU is often seen as a barrier, potentially stifling innovation by imposing complex requirements. 5. Diversity and Inclusion: A mere 10% of VC funding in European Deep Tech went to startups with at least one female founder. This calls for a significant push towards greater inclusivity and diversity 🌍 The report suggests some key areas for improvement: • Embracing risk culture. • Promoting talent clusters to attract expertise. • Enhancing the terms for spinouts. • Expanding the LP base and governmental role in innovation. • Reviewing innovation policies with a focus on diversity 🔍 The journey ahead for European Deeptech is fascinating. We're on the cusp of significant breakthroughs, yet there are hurdles to overcome. Let's engage in this journey together - innovating, funding, and nurturing a more inclusive ecosystem. Deep tech stands out as one of the most resilient sectors in the European innovation ecosystem(s) at the moment. That was already one of the main findings in Atomico's annual and just-released 'State of European Tech' report, but the organisations behind the third annual report specific to European Deep Tech - Dealroom.co, Lakestar and Walden Catalyst Ventures - have put some fresh numbers on it. European deep tech as a category saw approximately $15 billion raised in 2023 to date (nearly on the same level as a year before), in stark contrast to e.g. the -70% decline observed in the European fintech sector. According to the report, European deep tech investment will close at -7% in 2023 vs. 2022 (compared to -46% for 'regular' tech). (For more insights, follow the link in comments or check out the full report, also linked below) Kudos for the great work Yoram Wijngaarde, Lorenzo Chiavarini, Steven Jacobs, Christina Franzeskides, Lukas Leitner and Nicolas Autret Yours truly, Hello Tomorrow, IESE Business School, European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA), Tech Tour, Bpifrance / EuroQuity - Bpifrance, EurA AG and Webrazzi / Tech.eu

The West Midlands is home to the fastest growing cluster of technology companies in the UK and we're also a driving force behind the Government's ambition to become a Science & Technology Superpower by 2030. However, it's not just technologies that are converging to create unprecedented levels of innovation in the West Midlands. Serviced by a rich pool of local talent, a unique "quad helix" of closely forged networks connects the region's academic institutions, industry tech clusters and local/national authorities. That's why tech companies coming to the West Midlands find it an attractive global investment hotspot. Melissa Snover, Founder & CEO at Get Nourish3d, has commented on her experience of the region's ecosystem below. The Global Growth Programme 2024 is now open to help international tech companies invest, establish and scale rapidly in the West Midlands. We're looking to work with ambitious CleanTech, Creative & Digital Tech, Future Mobility and HealthTech companies who are looking to accelerate their businesses. The event featured discussion groups and workshops and delegates formed action plans, focusing on things like investment, net zero, and a response to the new Government, ahead of a live vote to understand priorities.
