So last week I was at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. Lots of brilliant tech projects and ideas. Not so many projects aimed more at, well, the people who live in these cities. I've seen solutions for infrastructure problems, integration of transportation systems, 3D modelling for flood prevention, autonomous and intermodal everything. Not so many proposals on how to fix loneliness, housing prices, exclusion, etc. One of the few times I heard about the role of psychologists was during a panel on cybercrime - after all, that's when misunderstanding human behaviour makes a company lose a lot of money. I get it. Human issues are messy, and not as measurable as creating an intelligent building that saves energy or building roads and trains and making them talk to each other. And funding goes to measurable and sexy projects. But since cities are, ultimately, a bunch of people living together, I would love to see more of the "human smartness" side of things. Projects asking: how people feel about their cities? How they can be happier, safer, and feel included? And obviously, would love to see more funding going to these questions. As a humanities person, I'm asking myself: "In this context, how can make messy sexy?" #SCEWC24

🌆 Urban innovation isn't just about advanced technology; it's about solving real-world challenges like congestion, pollution, and infrastructure sustainability. The upcoming Smart City Open Innovation Challenge 2024 exemplifies this—with a hybrid model that brings together technology providers and urban planners worldwide, tailoring meaningful collaborations through personalized B2B matchmaking. Why does this matter? It highlights the critical role of integration between innovators and stakeholders to design cities that truly serve their communities. 💡 How can innovation managers balance scalability with integration in urban technology projects, especially given the diverse needs and regulatory landscapes of smart cities? 🔑 A scalable, integrative approach begins at the ideation stage. Prioritize modular technologies that allow easy expansion while understanding urban-specific constraints, such as legacy systems and compliance requirements. Building strong cross-sector collaborations early can ensure alignment with city planners and regulatory bodies, increasing both adoption and impact potential. The key is treating scalability as a flexibility feature, not just a growth ambition. #SmartCitySolutions #UrbanInnovation #SmartTech #UrbanFutures #ValueInnovation §1085

Smart Cities - that's what I wanna talk about! Not what splits us, but what really brings us together. The world is gathered in Barcelona to talk about how we can make urban life more sustainable - both socially, economically and environmentally. "Urban data" was the name of the session I took part in, together with Anders Broberg from Stockholm and Tomas Lehtinen from Helsinki, wonderfully moderated by Thomas Bergøy Johansen and what we talked about was... no, not technology - but culture! Yes we need enabling regal frameworks and tech infrastructure, but both the quality of data and use of data ultimately depends on people seeing the value of using it. I look forward to share more examples of how we are moving to become more data-driven in Bydel Gamle Oslo I forget to think about photos on stage, but here is at least some kind of proof that I really was there 😀 Smart City Expo World Congress
