Yesterday we celebrated our 6 year wedding anniversary.🎊 Now I bet you can all guess how it was spent ⚽️😅 Tbh I wouldn’t have it any other way Maybe because we spend over 80% of our time together , as we work together ! 😳 I know, most people’s reaction when I say that is 🤯 I could never do that But for us it works 🌎 And I couldn’t imagine navigating this world of running a business without him. 🫶🏼 Here are some reasons why it’s works ? & really why it’s no different to having a business partner … 👨👩👧👦 We BOTH have had the pleasure and continue to see our children grow . This is the over riding factor for us the flexibility that it allows and that particularly during their youngest years we’ve pretty much been based out of the office in our family home 🏡 🖥️ We have have VERY different roles within the business . Ben is more back office and I’m client facing. It’s suits our personalities but neither of us could excel at our role without having the other person doing theirs . 🗣️ Being a business owner can be lonely at the best of times. Having someone that not only understands the business but the unique field we work in really helps when I need to offload. Although some of our conversations over the dinner table can get boring 😂 Finally the one thing that underpins it all is … ⏳Ben has so much patience 🤣 6 years married , 4 years as business partners , 2 children. Whenever I hear about anniversary celebrations, I always ask the couple, "What’s your secret?" Because let’s be real—there’s so much value in learning from couples who are still celebrating, year after year. And you know what I hear most? It’s all about *showing up* for each other. That means really listening, learning, trying to understand, and being your partner’s biggest support. At the end of the day, everyone just wants to feel seen and like they’re a priority. So if you’re wondering what the secret to a happy relationship is, here it is: get back to the basics.

🎉 Today, my husband Emanur Rahman and I are celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary 🎉. Together, we’ve navigated: 🏡🏡 house moves 👧🏽🧒🏽 amazing kids, and 🗄🗄🗄🗄🗄🗄🗄 businesses What's our secret? Well, we’ve always made it a priority to pause for breath, take stock and regularly re-evaluate our goals in life....That might sound a bit over the top, but we actually do this! We have to keep up with how we're evolving as individuals and as partners as we move through life and all that it brings. Open communication, of course, has been key, ensuring that we can always ask for what we need at each stage of our journey. In many ways, relationships are just like businesses, don’t you think? They need constant reassessment. Without regular check-ins and open dialogue, things can become stagnant, barriers can form and ultimately they can break down. Emanur definitely has his work cut out, as I am always reinventing myself or my businesses. Fun fact: I was once dubbed the ‘Madonna of Accountancy’ 👩🏻🎤 - constantly evolving, and with Boodl, I'm clearly still at it! As long as we keep the doors to communication open and, as Madonna says, ‘Express Yourself’ 😜, then everything will be just fine. Constant calibration. It's my nine-year wedding anniversary today, and it has made me reflect on what it has taken us to get here: Constant calibration. Being in a relationship, whether it is with your partner in life or business, means juggling three things: 1. Looking inward: How am I? Am I living my values? 2. Looking at each other: Do we really see each other? How can we support each other? 3. Looking at the shared vision: Where are we headed? Are we still on track? It really is quite special when you find someone who aligns with you on all these levels. But it also takes energy, time and work. Like everything that is worthwhile pursuing, you have to nourish it. I don't believe that you can just "let it flow". It requires constant calibration. I am eternally grateful for Stuart Shepherd, my partner in life, and Saskia Roskam 🍪, my partner in business, who are on this journey with me. They never shy away from doing the work to make what we share stronger and get us closer to where we want to be. Bono so beautifully said: "Rather than falling in love, we were climbing up toward it.  We still are." And so are we. #anniverary #relationships #foundation

Today is our 21st wedding anniversary! While reminiscing about our journey, I couldn't help but draw parallels with the lessons I learned while on our recent trip to Glacier National Park. It's such a great metaphor for life and partnership so I wanted to share 21 takeaways! 1 - Find a partner you trust and who is both calm and capable. Make sure they have your only can of bear spray. 2 - Sharing a combined physical task will bring you together. 3 - Learn to be flexible. Life will throw curve balls so you need to prioritize what is ultimately important and let the other stuff go. 4 - Don’t discount the journey in pursuit of the destination. (This pic was taken only about half way to the summit - Grinnell Glacier Lake). 5 - Gentlemen: if you carry a snack and an extra sweatshirt, you will solve 80% of your partner’s discomfort. 6 - The leader will set the pace and tone, choose them wisely. 7 - There are people who know how to read a map, and those who don’t. Make sure you find one another. 8 - Take calculated risks. Hitchhiking through a National Park was definitely one of them. 9 - You get to see the true side of someone when you spend days together without cell phone service. 10 - Just when you think you’re crushing it, there’s going to be a kid in flip-flops swinging a naked barbie who will pass you. 11 - Believe in the innate good of others. Humans have the capacity and willingness to give freely. Supplies, wisdom, encouragement … it’s all around you, you just have to look for it. 12 - We’re given one body, take care of it as best you can. 13 - Put yourself in humbling positions as a reminder of your insignificance. Whether under the big sky, looking down from a mountain, or being lowest on the food chain, it’s important to remember we are but a speck. 14 - Find a lifelong cheerleader. 4:00 a.m. wake up calls can really suck if you don’t have someone encouraging you. 15 - There will be peaks and valleys. Sometimes you just need to keep putting one foot in front of the other. 16 - Be comfortable in silence. 17 - Avoid the trap of trying to plan every detail. Leave room for spontaneous adventures. 18 - Be willing to laugh at yourself and one another. 19 - Time is the only resource you can’t acquire more of, so find a partner you want to invest your most valuable resource with. 20 - Learn something new together. And it’s OK to boast if you’re better at it … just ask me about the fly fishing clinic I put on. 21 - In all things, give thanks. This week, me and my wife Rachel celebrated our 19 year wedding anniversary! How she’s put up with me for this long I don’t know🤣 What’s really hit me though is how quick this time has gone. That day 19 years ago where she was an hour late🙈 (I was twitching🤣)… but when we just had the best day and night, that does not feel like 19 years ago!!! Time really does fly by! Time waits for no one. Why am I writing this? Well, because sometimes, when I work with clients and we identify what needs to be changed in the business, the response is I’ll look at that in… [insert month]… which is normally a few months down the line. There is actually no reason why they can’t address it now, except they’re putting it off… and that’s a challenge I often bring to them. Often, when we put things off, months turn into years… because time flies by! Sometimes, there’s never a good time to address and make that change… but it has to be done for the sake of your business, and the sooner the better. Grateful to have recently celebrated a wedding anniversary. Every year, we hike a mile up a trail to a charming yurt with an outdoor deck that overlooks a breathtaking mountain landscape. This tradition has become a time for us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the journey we’ve taken together. Anniversaries are more than just milestones—they’re opportunities to assess our growth, challenges, and successes. Whether in relationships, careers, or other significant aspects of life, reflection offers a chance to gain perspective and set intentions for the future. As I reflect on my recent wedding anniversary, I’m also reminded that it’s just a couple of weeks past the anniversary of taking the bar exam—a perfect time to consider whether you’re on track and moving in the right direction. For associate attorneys, finding time to reflect can be tough amidst billable hour requirements, challenging work, and personal obligations. However, making time for reflection is essential. Here are some questions to consider: - Am I working on the types of projects I want? - Have I found a mentor who supports my growth and development? - Am I being compensated fairly? - Is my work-life balance where I want it to be? - Is the firm I’m at the right place for me long-term, and will it set me up for success in achieving my goals, whether making partner or transitioning in-house?
