China and other Asian nations and communities around the world have welcomed this week the Year of the Snake. The snake's sharp senses and keen awareness represent heightened intuition and adaptability. Often associated with ancient wisdom and healing, the snake carries a potent symbolism of transformation and regeneration, inviting us to embrace change, release old patterns, and tap into our innate healing powers. Especially in this dynamic era of transformation, the skin shedding known to snakes is appreciated as a new impulse. It’s about shedding the confines of thoughts shaped by the recent past, letting go of dogmatic beliefs. The snake year is where that kind of shedding, regeneration, and growth — domestic and geopolitical, communal and institutional — is very much possible. Do you want Ice Cream After History? 🍦🏰 Today, on the first day of the new year, we visited the Forbidden City in Beijing. Walking through the gates, I thought about the royal family who lived there hundreds of years ago. Their life must have been so different from ours—full of rules, responsibilities, and traditions. But at the same time, they were just a family, facing their own struggles and making decisions that shaped their future. The Forbidden City reminded me that life isn’t about rushing to the end. The emperor’s family didn’t build this palace in a day—it took years of hard work and planning. It’s a good reminder for us too: if we want to achieve something meaningful this year, it will take time and patience. After a day of walking and thinking, we decided to treat ourselves to ice cream. It felt a little funny to eat ice cream on a cold day, but it made me realize something. Even though the royal family lived in such a grand place, I’m not sure they got to enjoy the small joys we sometimes take for granted—like a sweet treat after a long day. This year, I want to carry three lessons with me: take the time to work on what matters, find joy in the little things, and trust that God is always with us, guiding and strengthening us along the way. Two years after Sami elder Lars Henrik asked the Kogi Mamos for spiritual support, a powerful ritual took place. Sacred reindeer antlers, lost for generations, were returned to holy sites in a ceremony of profound reconnection. This ritual not only strengthened Sami traditions but also inspired the revival of long-forgotten practices, like the ancient art of making reindeer cheese. If China speaks of "opening to the rest of the world", it is simply expanding its array of international trade and economic war capacities. The latest one sounds like "We come in peace 100.0".
