There’s no doubt that allocation to alts by individual investors will continue to increase. The more interesting question is where the money will be flowing. This article by WealthManagement.com highlights the different approaches by RIA allocators. Though striking, I was not surprised that they focused on private equity, private credit, and real estate over hedge funds. It’s a trend that’s been going on for some time. I’m curious whether firms will adjust to this dynamic by simplifying their offerings or just keep chugging along waiting for the tide to turn. "When considering allocating to alternative investments – which are for accredited investors and qualified purchasers as defined by the Securities and Exchange Commission – Heather Goodbody, CEPA® says it’s important to take into consideration a client’s risk tolerance, time horizon and liquidity needs." "Elizabeth Thorley, MS, CFP®, CLU, AIF®, AEP®, CFP, founder and CEO of Thorley Wealth Management, Inc. Management reflects that the alternatives industry pre-great financial crisis was largely isolated to institutional investors and individuals of extreme wealth, but post-crisis there has been overwhelming demand from investors to expand their opportunity set via alternatives and with a proliferation of retail-friendly structures." “LVW Advisors has been investing in alternatives since the 1990s; however, the demand has definitely increased as they have become much more well known,” Lori Van Dusen said. “The tricky part is that the financial industry often oversimplifies alternative investments, potentially misleading investors. Many products marketed as ‘alternative’ may not provide true diversification or improve returns.” #PrivateWealth #WealthManagement #RealAssets #PrivateMarkets #AlternativeInvestments #Alts #UHNW #HNW #FamilyOffices #IBD #RIA #PrivateInvestments #PrivateCredit #PrivateEquity #RealEstate

As with fund of funds, wealth management firms are the intermediaries between the end user investors and your firm. Unlike fund of funds, however, allocations from RIA wealth managers have the potential to be more sticky assets for the money manager. Of course, you will need to give these gatekeepers reason to see that putting their clients in your LP is more than just a performance chasing move. Frumerman & Nemeth CEO, Bruce Frumerman, offers five steps that your investment firm should take to build an action plan to make and maintain contact with investment advisor heads at wealth management firms in his blog post this month. https://lnkd.in/erpEHZ84 #assetraising #capitalraising #alternativeinvestments #hedgefunds

Alternative investments can have important contributions to portfolios when appropriate for client investment objectives and risk tolerance. Perhaps the most critical reason to consider the addition of alternative investments is the need to further diversify a stock and bond portfolio during a period of elevated correlations between the two traditional asset classes.
