Nottingham Forest recently hired former referee Mark Clattenberg as their 'referee analyst' which is apparently the first time an English team has done this. Without a job description to hand it's hard to understand exactly what he will be doing but Mark outlined it as: 'I will help in the understanding of how and why certain decisions are made, prepare pre-match packs on the officiating teams taking charge of their fixtures, and one of my other main aims will be improving the relationship between the club and the PGMOL.' It seems to have stirred a fair bit of criticism but my take fwiw: 1. We don't know the value of a new idea until someone tries it, so I appreciate the bravery to experiment and try something different 2. As a firm believer in the strategy of 'only is better than best', this is a good example in football and there aren't many in recent years 3. Role clarity, early wins and success definition will be obvious but important aspects of maximising this opportunity and getting org buy-in - the same with any new hire but especially one that many critics will be hoping fails! Looking forward to seeing this one play out and how competition reacts. https://lnkd.in/em38EX8u

On Saturday 16th December, the Premier League game between Bournemouth and Luton Town was abandoned after Hatters captain Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch. Since then they have beaten Newcastle United. And today secured all three pints in a comeback win at Sheffield United. And the presence of their missing captain is there for all to see. In their goal celebrations. Togetherness. Spirit. This is a team with a cause. And in sport, and in life a cause can be a very powerful thing indeed. With a cause you can move mountains. With a cause you can go beyond what you might have been personally able to achieve. A Cause = Power. A cause is when you are serving something greater than yourself. Like doing it for someone else. Who is not there. But you are there on their behalf. And when you have a cause you do not want to let that person down. So...you go the extra mile. Run longer. Harder. Faster. You have Cause Energy. The team have Cause Energy. You feed off each other. And now, suddenly, everything feels possible. A cause creates emotional fuel. And emotional fuel, when channelled correctly, is a very potent force indeed. Luton Town will want to see their captain back in action as soon as possible. But right now, they have one of the most powerful things in sport at their disposal. For a team with a cause is a team that feels unstoppable!

What is the real story here? I am seeing this photo posted many times as evidence that analysis can lead to better decisions. It is true that the water bottle used by England's goalkeeper correctly predicted that Pickford should dive right for Akanji's penalty and the resulting save won the game. It is, however, also true that the bottle suggested that Pickford should “Fake Right - Dive Left” for Schar’s penalty but Pickford chose to fake left and dive right while the ball went where the bottle predicted. So is the real story that analysis can help make winning decisions or is the real story that success could be even stronger if clients fully trusted the evidence and listened to analysts!?
