Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at our high accuracy 3D geospatial survey inside the Tyne Tunnel Northbound, a vital connection under the River Tyne, stretching an impressive 1690m. Built in 1967, the Tyne Tunnel has been an essential link between Newcastle and Gateshead for decades. As technology has advanced, so too has the need for precise, data-driven maintenance. That’s where we come in! Using specialist survey control network techniques, we’ve achieved sub-3mm accuracy over nearly 2km of linear traverse—ensuring the long-term stability and safety of this historic infrastructure. There will be a time in the not so distant future when these trigs will disappear from our landscape! Before GPS and Electronic Distance Measurement, surveyors could measure long distances by observing angles between Trig stations and calculating the distances between them with Trigonometry. FLASHBACK FRIDAY | A469 Rhymney Valley, Wales... The A469 near Troedrhiwfuwch, which runs between New Tredegar and Pontlottyn, was affected by a landslip in 2014, and further ground movement in 2020, due to Storm Dennis. Geotechnical Observations was contracted to supply and assist installing a number of vertical SAAs into and around the roadway to monitor ground movement, to ensure that any future movement would be detected in real time, providing data on displacement, and data provided to monitor ongoing changes. Due to its small diameter and robust design, a Shapearray can withstand huge deformations and is the perfect instrument to understand lateral displacements on isolated areas, thus reducing risk and cost, but overall providing quality data that can be interpreted to understand behaviour. This is the same picture as posted last week, but now with the effect of the shielding wires included. You see some resonances at higher frequencies. An #EarthingSystem has a specific resistance to the surrounding soil, based on the system geometry (shape and size) and the characteristics of the soil. Both aspects show a frequency dependent behaviour, which means that the earthing resistance does not have the same value for each frequency. In that case we should speak of an #EarthingImpedance. In the picture below two curves for a transmission line tower foundation is given for the frequency dependent behaviour of: Blue: the tower foundation only Red: both, the tower and soil Orange: the tower, soil and attached shielding wires (but no adjacent towers) Why is this important? Night work is part of our job as geospatial surveyors, especially when infrastructure can’t stop during the day.
