Why map the subsurface for AV #positioning? 🚧 Roads Change, the Underground Doesn’t: Vehicle surroundings are constantly in flux. Lane markings degrade over time, and potholes require road maintenance. This regular road wear and tear should not impact AV systems. ⛈️ Incomplete Environmental Detection: Sun glare and inclement weather can impact road visibility for automated systems. This is dangerous when snow or heavy rainfall prevents the perception of road markings that help with navigation. 🛣️ Lack of Unique Information: Environments like highways and parking garages can look very similar or lack traditional landmarks—such as signs, aisles, or lampposts—required for visual localization. Subsurface data is as unique as a fingerprint, even on concrete surfaces. Combine that with underground infrastructure, and it’s possible to determine a vehicle’s precise location. You are about do electrification of a community: The are certain things you look for before doing installation of electrical lines for example - line tracing: you visit the town or city to access the nearest available grid system and identify the voltage levels. - Site survey: you journey the route to determine any topography or optacle that might be encountered. topography( swamp areas, hills, slope areas, bridges, aerodrome). - Clearing of site: the process involved cutting of grass and felling of trees along the proposed transmission route. The grass can be cut manually or mechanically.

Why are you doing it that way!?! Notice the wattles on an add zigzag pattern! Why? The reason is to disperse runoff on sheet flow areas to preventing concentrated water flows from developing. This approach keeps soil in its original area and eliminates sediment load in stormwater, reducing the need for sediment basins, reducing the need for gigantic perimeter controls, reducing the potential for permit violations and/or lawsuits. Details: the wattles are placed on the contour...meaning at any given point within the wattle layout they wattle is perpendicular to the slope. The creates a damming effect. The way we determine the slope/contour is with drone technology and topographic modeling. On an unstable site, the topography isn't known after a rain event, because the rain moves the soil...yielding newly created topography. So we capture real-time topography, quickly develop a stabilization plan, and quickly implement the stabilization plan before the topography changes again at the next rain event. #Practitionership #SoilScience #Sustainability #EnvironmentalEngineering #StormwaterManagement

FLASHBACK FRIDAY | A469 Rhymney Valley, Wales... The A469 near Troedrhiwfuwch, which runs between New Tredegar and Pontlottyn, was affected by a landslip in 2014, and further ground movement in 2020, due to Storm Dennis. Geotechnical Observations was contracted to supply and assist installing a number of vertical SAAs into and around the roadway to monitor ground movement, to ensure that any future movement would be detected in real time, providing data on displacement, and data provided to monitor ongoing changes. Due to its small diameter and robust design, a Shapearray can withstand huge deformations and is the perfect instrument to understand lateral displacements on isolated areas, thus reducing risk and cost, but overall providing quality data that can be interpreted to understand behaviour. There will be a time in the not so distant future when these trigs will disappear from our landscape! Before GPS and Electronic Distance Measurement, surveyors could measure long distances by observing angles between Trig stations and calculating the distances between them with Trigonometry. The steel structure above the station is called a Beacon, and you’ll often find these on hill tops, where the beacons are inter-visible. #Surveying #MoselSurveyors #SurveyorJobs

Onto Day three of Surveyors week where we will be talking about Geodetic Surveys. 🥳 Geodetic Surveys provide precise information about where permanent features of the earth exist (volcanoes, rodaways, floodplains, etc). Geodetic surveys use equipment such as gps receiver's surveyor's levels and total station. To measure the elevation and location of various points on the site. #surveyorsweek #geodeticsurveys

Today in Kent, we conducted a Topographical and Measured Building Survey on a fire-damaged building. 🔥🏢 Despite challenges from structural damages, we used advanced non-contact laser scanning for safe, precise measurements. 📏🔍 This technology ensured both surveyor safety and structural integrity. Our laser scanning revealed in-depth details of the building's condition, essential for future restoration or demolition plans. 🛠️🔄 Additionally, we connected the survey data with the ordnance surcey national grid (OSGB) using GPS rover 🌍📍 📢 Need a detailed and safe building survey? 🚧 Insights into Tunnel Surveying 👷♂️Maintaining elevation control is crucial for tunnel surveys. The digital level is used to determine the elevation of newly established control points as well as previous control points. The below image was captured during the level line survey using the Trimble DiNi. #tunnelconstruction #trimble #survey #digitallevel
