Happy #GivingTuesday ! Please consider celebrating this year by donating to PSU’s Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA). This GivingTuesday, we are aiming to be able to develop internally by raising funds to create more opportunities for GPSA to support graduate students. We currently do not receive enough funds to be able to fully support the requests of student groups coming to us for co-sponsorship. We are working to expand our ability to offer integrated salaried positions to enable our student members to be supported for all of the work that they do. We have started work toward an initiative to train students to work as medical and legal interpreters for our legal, medical, and psychological clinics. Our long-term goal is to start being able to offer a childcare grant for graduate, professional, and medical students who are traveling for their research. We also want to create a Penn State Grad School publication, where we would be able to present the work of our students. GPSA is the longest-running student governing body here at Penn State, established 73 years ago. When you give to GPSA, your tax-deductible donation will go to support events that develop bonds and promote networking within the graduate and professional student communities. GPSA believes that We Are better together, and we work to build a better tomorrow for all graduate and professional students. https://lnkd.in/dG_GRKJW

This piece in the NACAC journal regarding the path from enrollment to the presidency is spot on. I truly think it is one of the few divisions where you not just work alongside everyone, you actually have to understand and often are engaged with the core functions in almost every area -- from new academic programs to complex financial planning to technology systems to facilities to retention and student success. I think institutions with presidents who have a deep understanding of the non-academic functions are better positioned to handle the rapid changes happening and coming to higher education. This quote at the end of the piece really says it all: "Admission provides great exposure to the entire institution because by nature of the job, you have to learn about financial aid, academics, finance, and every area of a college. But you also have to understand that the outcome of what you do impacts all those other areas." - Matthew Whelan

Amazing to read about such a powerful and personal gift for education. Putting wealth to work for others in perpetuity, truly inspirational. Not only will her gift benefit all those who have opportunities now made available to them, but it will transform the institution's future. where Philanthropic ambition creates societal impact and meets institutional need in the short and long term. https://lnkd.in/gZ2MfvuF When High Quality Education is a Priority and Not a Liability ! “By reducing the financial barriers to these essential fields, we can free more students to pursue careers they’re passionate about and enable them to serve more of the families and communities who need them the most,” Mr. Bloomberg said. The new gift from Mr. Bloomberg will mean that nearly 2/3 rds of medical students who currently attend Johns Hopkins or who will enter programs at the university soon will be eligible for Free Tuition or Both Free Tuition and Living Expenses, according to the university. This is Not the first large contribution to Johns Hopkins from Mr. Bloomberg, who routinely makes donations toward the arts, education, the environment and public health. Bloomberg Philanthropies made a $ 1.8 Billion donation to the university in 2018 as part of an effort to ensure that undergraduate students would be accepted by the university regardless of their family’s income. #education #universities #america #bloomberg #newyorktimes

As we approach year end, charitable giving is typically front of mind. Did you know the state of Georgia has some great programs to re-direct state income tax dollars to local non-profits and institutions. Two of them include: Georgia GOAL lets you direct tax dollars to a local school of choice. These funds have to be used for tuition assistance. https://lnkd.in/dyBvKcNd The state also allows you to direct tax dollars to qualified law enforcement foundations. The funds will be used to train officers, purchase or maintain equipment or go towards establishing a mental health co-responder program. https://lnkd.in/dh6RHJ-m For example, if you are going to pay $1,500 in state income taxes, you can elect to make a $1,500 contribution to your local police foundation and/or school and you will receive a $1,500 credit towards your state tax liability. Applications must be in by 12/31. This is a great way to contribute directly to your community- for "free." For more year end planning strategies, feel free to reach out to myself or any of my Fox Rothschild colleagues.

Each of us upholds or dismantles power systems every day, like when we choose where to put our hard-earned money on #givingtuesday. In a healthy democratic system, system-level power emerges from community empowerment. On the other hand, systemic disinvestment damages the connection between community and governance, and threatens the individual's ability to survive and thrive. You know the importance of teaching youth to recognize systemic power. The crucial next step is to invite youth to respectfully interrogate and collaborate with the system that will soon be theirs. I can think of no better organization that increases our capacity for community engagement than The Global Academy for Community-Based Education. #GACBE supports students in addressing systemic challenges in their own community, teaching how to ask questions of shareholders outside the classroom, and looking for feasible community-driven solutions. It's the ultimate inquiry-driven project-based holistic learning model. This mode of discourse has the power to transform by creating new perspectives for decision-makers, building connections across sectors, and empowering the youth to envision a role in their community's future. I have the honor of serving on the board of this brand new 501c3. It has established impact and tremendous potential. Because we are a new nonprofit, your help can make a tremendous difference, whatever the amount. Please donate at https://lnkd.in/eCnWDubs. To learn more, visit www.CBEglobal.org. Let's help Mrs. (Katie) Cranley, a teacher at RUSD and a neighbor here in Racine. Students in functional/adaptive units prioritize curriculums aligned to both academics and essential life skills for their transition to an independent and fulfilling life after graduation. To empower teachers in equipping students with the necessary knowledge, tools must be available to facilitate access to the curriculum for teaching these valuable life skills. With your support, we will have the opportunity to equip our students with the resources they need to not just succeed, but excel in their future endeavors. The mentioned resources are essential for creating a comprehensive curriculum that empowers students with necessary information for fostering their independence. https://lnkd.in/g_U5N7fa

Here’s what high school juniors and seniors should consider as they begin preparing for college.
Parenting a high school senior is not for the faint of heart. Great interview this morning with Barry University's Provost Dr. Pablo Ortiz on the areas parents and students need to consider including the SAT going completely digital - no more scantrons?!?! #PublicRelations #NonProfitPublicRelations #EducationPublicRelations https://lnkd.in/dShRjuPQ
