The data may show fewer promotion or mentoring opportunities for remote workers. I say: cultivate them. Take deliberate action to position yourself for your next role. In or out of office, it takes deliberate effort to demonstrate leadership, make connections, build relationships, network, lend a hand, etc. Proximity helps - as does a well-timed phone/video call. You want to be top of mind when an opportunity arises. This WSJ author comments on fewer mentoring opportunities for remote workers. In my experience, mentoring is more often informal rather than formal or company-designed. Mentors rarely "come to you." The leaders I advise actively seek out mentors (and advocates). Remote work is unlikely to go away. And let's be real: while the pandemic elevated its use and usefulness, remote work and dispersed teams have been around for a long time. Is anyone surprised that remote workers are not getting promotions? This article in the WSJ discusses why it is important to be in the office to be promoted. A surprising item in this story is that @NickBloom at Stanford calls this "discrimination!" Really, folks are making a choice to stay home and good for them, but like most things, there are tradeoffs.

Are your employees cheating on you? In a recent search for a part-time executive assistant, I encountered a notable trend: over half of the applicants were already committed to full-time positions elsewhere. Almost all of them expressed confidence in their ability to juggle both roles, citing extreme flexibility and the capacity to devote 20 business hours to the new position while maintaining their current employment. This brings up some big questions about dealing with remote teams and managing possible conflicts of interest. How do we, as employers, ensure that our remote team members are giving their all to their primary roles? And what's your take on employees dabbling in multiple jobs simultaneously?
