One of the standout themes for me at the lunch! and Casual Dining shows this week was innovation 💡. It’s brilliant to see new concepts emerging, with operators successfully creating new propositions and disrupting the market 🚀. A great example of this is chaiiwala, a family business started in 2015, which is bringing casual Indian food to the masses. Co-founder Sohail Ali talked about how they started the business after recognising the opportunity to bring a proper Indian tea to Britain, and their first site was opened with the brand built on the idea that they wanted people to take pictures 📸. I obliged with the picture taking on my visit to the Chaiiwala at Fosse Park earlier today, which is now one of 200 stores they have across the UK. Sohail revealed that there’s a £30 million deal going through with Euro Garages, which will see drive-thrus opening across the country 🚗, so the chances are there will be a Chaiiwala opening near you soon if you haven’t yet experienced this incredible brand. I had a quick look at Hospitality Data Insights (HDI) Chain Intel Pro data for Chaiiwala to see how they benchmark versus other Coffee & Sandwich chains. The numbers make for impressive reading: 🎯 Nearly 40% of spend from customers aged 18-34 – a significant over-index 💸 1/3 of their sales in the £10-£20 ATV band, again a significant over-index 🚴♂️ Clear preference shown by their customers for one of the major delivery aggregators Site Intel Pro data for the Fosse Park store is equally impressive. They’re growing their share of the local market, increasing their share of spend from their own customers (share of wallet) and their visit frequency stats show that they over-index with customers visiting multiple times per year 🔁. I loved how Sohail talked about how “competition is the breakfast of champions.” This is a business that is clearly in the ascendancy 📈, and they are very much in it for the long-term.
