In an era when the U.S. is spending $1.5 trillion dollars to upgrade its nuclear arsenal, China is ramping up its nuclear program, and Russia is conducting nuclear drills in Ukraine — the atomic age seems not that far away. Nuclear Deterrence and overall deterrence theory is a professional passion of mine. Nuclear security and adherence to international treaties where we are signatories is critical to the continued cooperation between nuclear-equipped nations. There are numerous agencies and organizations that execute these operations and the Y-12 National Security Complex is one of the more prominent ones. Episode 113 of The Afterburn Podcast sees Rain interview Dr. Martin Williamson, the Senior Director of Global Security and Strategic Partnerships for Consolidated Nuclear Security (quite the title!), an interesting sit down and dive into the prevailing notion that possessing nuclear weapons is more about deterring conventional conflict between states and never having to use them. The H3D H420 is helping make huge steps forward in radioactive materials management! Page 3 of the January 2024 DNN Sentinel discusses the H420's contributions to the disposal of weapons-grade plutonium. As stated in the article, "The ability to accurately measure quantities of nuclear material is essential to the safety and security of this mission," which can be accomplished using our commercial off-the-shelf radiation imagers. The H420 was used to measure and map holdup in the gloveboxes used for safely handling plutonium during the downblending process. In the context of these first trial years, the deployed H420 units quantified the amount of holdup plutonium with improved precision compared to the established method. https://lnkd.in/gW-cqBQA
