Is there anything better than spending the day with counselors? This week our team was in Denver with school counselor corps grantees talking ICAP, blurring counseling domains- social emotional, academic and career & exploring work based learning and other interventions Some of the things we heard: -How do we get to career advising when we have students not getting basic needs met? -How do our counselors connect better with CTE teams to get exposed to trends in the labor market? -How do we address barriers to accessing work based learning? -How do we know we’re reaching students that need in school career development the most? -How do we start career interventions earlier so that students see themselves in top jobs? And what are they already doing? -Bringing employers in as a partner in planning WBL -Connecting student interests with their academic and career goals -Bringing parents and families into the conversation

Positive news: good policy, focus, and results matter, and political rhetoric is just flat BS. “Rhetorical appeals are persuasive strategies used in writing and speech to convince an audience. They consist of ethos (credibility), pathos (emotion), and logos (logic), each serving a unique purpose in argumentation”. (writing common.org) Short version: makes you feel good and does nothing. “It’s time to rebuild the U.S. career and technical education system, providing opportunity for Americans to pursue well-paid career paths that don’t require a four-year college degree. This will be a long-term effort, requiring action from both the government and private business to succeed, and can include everything from labor-business partnerships to apprenticeship programs”. (Alliance for Amercian Manufacturing, 2024)

This would have been the perfect Festivus post, so, too late but in that spirit: A lot of y'all liked my last post but didn't fill out my form. 😐 Reposting my original plea below. Please consider signing up at https://lnkd.in/gR8AqWYc to be available to talk to UTC's political science, public administration, and nonprofit management students about your career, whether it's very "political science-y" or not. THANK YOU. >> Hello, friends and colleagues. We are always looking for ways to help our students learn about career pathways, and we want to make the most of our best resource: YOU! Would you be willing to connect with UTC political science, nonprofit management, and public administration students who are interested in a career like yours? That could look like: > A one-time informational interview > Ongoing mentorship > Hosting an internship > Providing input on student projects > A classroom visit > Giving feedback on student presentations If so, we would love to add you to our UTC PSPS Professional Network. Would you please take a moment to complete the quick online form at https://lnkd.in/gR8AqWYc? There, we’ll just ask for your name, preferred contact information, job title and place of employment, areas of expertise, and the ways you are willing to be involved—whether low prep, low time commitment or more long term, significant time commitment. Thank you very much for considering how you might be involved. If you have any questions or ideas for connecting with students that aren’t listed on the form, please feel free to email me at Christopher-Horne@utc.edu.

Helping high school students find their path to success after graduation/Leadership Louisville Center, Focus Louisville '23
Spring fever is in full bloom! Derby season starts Saturday, prom pictures are all over social media, and graduation gowns are hanging up to let the wrinkles fall out of them. It’s an exciting time! If you have a high school junior, it’s also the perfect time to work on what your student will be doing after high school graduation next year. Community college Four-year university Gap year Trade school Workforce Military Study abroad Americorps All of those are great options and pathways to success. But navigating all those choices can be daunting, which is where I come in. I can cut through the noise and do the research on all the options for you. I put together an easy-to-follow calendar with all the tasks needed for your student to have plenty of options to choose from a year from now. I walk you and your student through the process with encouragement and accountability. I provide another source of support for all things related to life after high school (housing, scholarships, etc.). I’m happy to provide references and set up and info chat with anyone interested (since our work together is virtual, no need to be local to me). Comment or message if you have questions. I have limited spots for the class of 2025 now open.
