As political parties gear up for the next general election with promises of social mobility, the question arises: Is PR truly an inclusive profession? Because according to experts, the industry might be missing out on some real talent. The recent Chartered Institute of Public Relations 75th anniversary issue of Influence featured interviews with PR pioneers who shaped the industry without attending university. Yet, today’s statistics paint a different picture: the Levelling Up Public Relations report found that nearly 86% of respondents had attended university, with their social background impacting career progression for over a quarter. But for PR professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds, ‘imposter syndrome’ and lack of familiarity with office culture can hinder progress. From accent discrimination to unpaid internships, barriers persist. And that’s damaging for PR: diversity is crucial for reflecting society accurately and delivering effective campaigns. Simply put, Pitches exist because brands can't tell agencies apart. There are 90,000 agencies in the United States, most of which promise prospective clients (some variation of) "breakthrough work in culture", powered by the exact same list of services, and delivered through some oddly named "proprietary" process of which is not materially different at all. Don't want to pitch? Here are THREE things agencies can do: 1) Create a proposition that promises a specific valuable outcome your agency can authentically and consistently deliver to clients. This is your expertise. 2) Proactively build relationships with prospects you know require this expertise. (Clue: it is not every brand A-Z in any industry you don't yet work in) 3) Build your reputation in the industry for this expertise. This will help brands understand what sets you apart from your competition and know when they should contact you. Here's the formula: EXPERTISE + RELATIONSHIPS + REPUTATION = GROWTH I promise, if your agency follows these three key steps, you will pitch less, yet win more. 🎓 As the first semester of my M.S.c in Digital Marketing at Maynooth University ends, I’m reflecting on these intense but incredible past few months. I remembered one particular moment that impacted me and changed my last academic journey: my first Digital Marketing Communications class. In the first class, we introduced ourselves and our backgrounds. It was a bit nerve-wracking for me as some of my colleagues had extensive experience in marketing through their undergraduate degrees in marketing or business. Our lecturer, Dr. Gillian Moran, shared some insightful thoughts that resonated with me. She emphasised that not having a marketing work experience at the master’s level is not a bad thing. She highlighted the value of diverse experiences and how they can contribute to becoming a well-rounded marketer. 🌟 I’ve had the privilege of interning as a journalist at BANTUMEN after earning my undergraduate degree in journalism at Escola Superior de Comunicação Social and working as a front-desk receptionist at ResidHotel Galerie Tatry. While these roles may seem unrelated to marketing at first glance, they have provided me with valuable skills and perspectives to make me a stronger marketer in the long run. ✨ My experience as a journalist honed my investigative research, writing, and storytelling skills. Additionally, my time as a receptionist taught me the importance of providing exceptional customer experiences and the value of effective communication. I’m confident that my unique journey will bring a fresh perspective to the marketing field.
