Travel can arise for professional or personal reasons, and for Account Associate Hannah Happawana, her recent trip to NYC turned out to be both. Usually based in our London office, Hannah seized the opportunity to visit and work from our NYC headquarters before her family holiday in the city kicked off. A recent new hire on our Medical Education team, Hannah wanted to take advantage of the opportunity to continue learning about RC and building connections across team. And in a world of virtual and hybrid work, here is what she learned. 1. It’s called the Big Apple for a reason: Hannah was surprised by the scale of New York, and how seemingly everything was bigger. She shares “Everything in New York, from the buildings - to the office and to the company itself, is larger, which really highlighted the scale of Real Chemistry and the numerous teams involved in bringing it all together.” 2. Hierarchy turned into approachability: Hannah admits that when meeting teammates in New York, she wasn’t thinking about how senior a role they held or office hierarchy – she was just happy to meet them as another RC colleague and a new friendly face. “It felt like an equal playing field, individuals from different parts of the world and various company sectors and allowed me to quickly find common ground with people I had just met. This experience has now made it easier for me to approach senior colleagues in the London office and better understand the company’s structure.” 3. Cross-functional and cross-regional connections matter: In a world of hybrid work, and despite going into the office in London, Hannah shares she now has a better understanding of her role within this large company, as well as many other roles that aren't necessarily in her office but exist globally. “It was like putting together a puzzle, seeing all the pieces come together to reveal the bigger picture.” 4.You can’t go wrong with a classic NYC bagel: And perhaps the most important lesson of all, when visiting NYC you must leave ample time for a morning bagel for your commute! What Danish working culture taught me? After a decade, I can confidently say that I've gained a profound understanding of what Danish working culture entails. Started as an intern and student assistant, all the way to being tech lead. 🔹 Flat Hierarchy: In Denmark, everyone's voice matters, regardless of their position. The flat hierarchy fosters an environment where ideas are valued, and contributions are recognized. 🔹 No Micromanagement: Trust and autonomy are not just words here; they're ingrained in the culture. From flexible sick leave policies to trusting employees to manage their schedules, micromanagement is a rare sight. 🔹 Work-Life Balance: The Danes understand the importance of enjoying life outside of work, especially when the sun is shining (which isn't often!). Prioritizing a healthy work-life balance is not just encouraged but actively supported. 🔹 Flexibility: Need to attend a doctor's appointment or pick up the kids from daycare? No problem. Danish workplaces understand that life happens, and flexibility is key to accommodating personal responsibilities. 🔹 Team Collaboration: Collaboration isn't just a buzzword; it's a way of life in Danish workplaces. Supporting and helping colleagues is not just encouraged but expected, fostering a strong sense of teamwork and unity. 🔹 Open Communication: Transparency and open communication are the cornerstones of Danish workplaces. The name is spot on, and it truly has an executive feel. Our clients and candidates appreciate our private meeting room facilities, and the team at Angle really enjoy the working environment, so do I! 🌆 Working Remotely in New York City I’ve been in New York for work in the past, but said past trips never allowed me to really see the city like I have this time. As a born and raised Angeleno, I truly thought LA was the greatest city in the world; the weather, the home to creatives, the laid-back energy, the emphasis on well-being, and the sheer volume of opportunity. Now getting to experience New York City, I truly understand what a real city looks like. To those of you who have built your lives and careers in New York and were never tempted by the siren songs of LA or Miami, I get it now. Known for its fast pace and bustling energy, the culture here is renowned for its directness and assertiveness. What isn’t talked about as much is how kind and patient New Yorkers are in general. There’s an understanding that “There’s a lot of us packed together in here, and we all have to survive together, and help each other get where we’re going”. What I love about the energy here, is that there’s a rhythm to getting around here that’s so different than in LA. Part of it is the weather (you’ve got to move fast to keep your blood pumping), part of it is not causing a jam on the sidewalk, and part of it is just how busy and determined everyone is to get where they’re going. Not as many leisurely walkers or stationary cell-phone talkers outside. I also love mornings, and getting to be between 1-3 hours ahead of the rest of the country. No wonder New York sets the pace for everything that happens in the business world not only for the rest of the country, but the world. It’s become a time of intense focus on productivity for me, and I’m sure it's an advantage New Yorkers have grown up with and taken for granted. I plan on returning again later in the winter for conferences, but just wanted to share my observations and newfound love for the city. Looking forward to reconnecting with more of my NYC friends and acquaintances in due time. #nyc #remotework #workcation #happyholidays
