In 2009, I graduated with a finance degree but for the life of me, could not find a "good" job. At the time, my peers and I glamorized the BEST employer brand names. We all wanted a job with a tier 1 firm, but NONE wanted me. Literally applied to anything and everything. After coming home at 11:30pm from the restaurant I worked at 7 days a week, I'd apply for 1-3 hours every night to as many companies as I could. The only bites I got were if I would relocate to Singapore or Hong Kong (obviously being bilingual that actually made me a good hire out there). Realistically, that just wasn't gonna happen. The other bites I got were from scammy sales jobs and while I had no problem pursuing a job in sales, they all sounded super sketchy. Finally, there was a recruitment firm that called me for a job. I thought they wanted me for a finance role but no, they asked me if I've ever heard of recruitment? To which I said, no. To which they said, have you heard of headhunting? And I said again, nope. So they said, come on in so we can tell you about it. And basically this is how I ended up becoming a headhunter at age 23 and never looked back. It became my forever profession, the rest is history bla bla bla. The reason why I share this story is two-fold: 1. Do not be dejected if Plans A, B and C failed. Plan D, something you've never considered before, can also pop up and be the right thing for you. 2. Whatever direction you go in, give it your utmost! The recruitment firm that hired me was a competitive place to work at. Plus, the job itself is a complete grind!!! I ground it out and then some. Within 5 years, I didn't have to work anymore. SO??? A Peek Behind the Recruiting Curtain - I am working on a role for an "A shop" this week. It is a skillset that has significant candidate supply (finance). As a result, a high % of our messages were returned. I got several primary responses: (1) "when can I talk to you Noah" (or they just called me immediately), (2) "can you provide more detail on the compensation?", or (3) "can you send me the job description 1st so I can review if it aligns?" All of my 3 scheduled interviews this week came from bucket (1). They beat out all of the other candidates due to "time". They were showing me they were potential strong motivational fits. All 3 candidates are very strong - 2 Ivy Leaguers, all had good grades, a top 3 MBA school, a top 2 investment bank, exceptional work experience and resumes. Trust me when I tell you - they were not desperate. But they were running toward their job search and potential "A" opportunities. So if you are in a skillset with high candidate supply, I would strongly consider eliminating delays in your own processing. I know in this current search, investment bankers are extremely busy, they get a lot of calls, and some of them don't know me. But some "A players" in bucket (1) were beating out some of you "A" players in buckets (2) and (3) this week.
