At Lakeside Landing, the Graham Baba design team utilized the challenging slope as an opportunity, orienting the most-used spaces on each level towards the water. A bridge from the street spans the one-story drop between the road and the entry. At the front door, the visitor is greeted by a hint of the panoramic view revealed upon entry to the spacious living-dining space. https://lnkd.in/gCHJsbaJ Architecture and Interiors: Graham Baba Architects Landscape Architect: Geyer Coburn Hutchins Contractor: CA Adams, LLC Structural Engineer: Lund Opsahl Sustainability: Green roof Photography: Ross Eckert Photo

Just last week, we unveiled a project that truly exemplifies the brilliance of architectural steelwork. 🏗️✨ In the heart of the city, we transformed a once-dated building into a modern masterpiece, thanks to the innovative use of steel. The project was a testament to the versatility and strength of this material, which allowed us to push the boundaries of design and functionality. The highlight was the atrium. We crafted a sweeping steel staircase that serves not just as a means of ascent but as the centrepiece of the entire structure. Its sleek lines and reflective surfaces catch the light beautifully, creating a dynamic interplay of shadows and highlights throughout the day. But it wasn't just about aesthetics. The steelwork played a crucial role in the building's structural integrity. We engineered a series of steel frames that not only supported the additional floors but also enhanced the building's resistance to seismic activity. This fusion of form and function is something I take great pride in. This project is a clear indicator of how architectural steelwork isn't just a component of construction; it's a canvas for innovation. #Architecture #Steelwork #Innovation

Accentuating the view. Architects think about how a building makes you feel when you see it from the outside, how you feel when you're inside each room, and how the building relates to the world around it. A giant window like this is designed to provide a view, so it's important to show that view in photos. Sometimes, I'll let the windows be lighter and choose to obscure the details if they're distracting, like when there's another building right outside. In this photo, I wanted the view of the big sky to take center stage, so the interior is represented, but secondary. I also typically wouldn't want hard shadows like this, but in this context I think they're really dynamic and add to the visual interest. With the TVs, the table and the extreme perspective, the shadows act as additional leading lines bringing your eye back to—you guessed it— the view. Looking to start your own custom build? Take a look at a recent self-build designed by Studio Homer. The design here was led by the topography of the valley site. Previous applications on the site for multiple units of a traditional form have been refused for creating an overbearing impact when viewed from the roadside or neighbouring properties. Due to the slope of the site, building heights in previous applications had been exaggerated. Locating the building parallel to land contours, proposing a split level to the bungalow, and sinking the building into the land greatly reduced the visual massing of the building. The use of biophilic materials further aims to blend the building into the woodland valley. A living roof over stepped levels blends the building into the sloping grasslands while Timber cladding on the exterior walls responds to the woodlands that form the boundary of the site. If you are considering your own custom/self-build, or facing a challenging site, contact Studio Homer for a creative solution. #selfbuild #custombuild #livingroof #planningconsultant #architecture #dorset #hampshire #bournemouth #christchurch #poole

Civil Engineers care about more than just structure! ️ #Architecture #SurfaceFinishes Choosing the right architectural finish isn't just about looks, it impacts performance too! Here's a breakdown: Paint: Versatile, low-maintenance, but requires proper prep & can chip/fade over time. ❌ Avoid on high-traffic areas. ✅ Use high-quality paints for durability. Stone: Luxurious, durable, but can be expensive & susceptible to staining. ❌ Avoid in areas prone to heavy impacts. ✅ Use for a timeless, elegant look in low-traffic areas. Remember: Material selection depends on factors like budget, desired aesthetic, and exposure to elements. Always consider the function of the space! #BuildingMaterials #Design

🕰 Here's an epic #tbt for you: Did you know that Cantifix pioneered structural glazing? We created the first-ever project to use glass to bear building loads way back in 1991 with Fitzroy Park: a unique innovation of architectural skill. Cantifix's expertise set the standard in building design for years to come. Structural glazing has many advantages for your next project. It offers a practical frameless glass solution, which can create a stunning space. Unlike when a construction frame is used, structural glazing can include bespoke fixing details that can be hidden, creating a clear glass installation and strengthening the very fabric of your building. If you are considering glass as a key element in your renovation, extension or construction project - go for the original: choose Cantifix. #structuralglazing #structuralglass #glassdesign #glazinginnovation
