A lot of people want to do good. To achieve this, most started sharing food items to the poor, supporting underprivileged children with school fees, using their platforms to advocate for good causes, giving financial aid to small business owners and so many other good ventures. As time progresses, some decided to do this on a larger scale and then decides to start a nonprofit organization. So, they quickly register an initiative or foundation, onboard/recruit few people and volunteers, and continued their work with a desire for more. As they grew, sustaining the initiative becomes a big issue. There is scavenging for grants and different funding opportunities, and for every one of such they find, thousands apply and only those with higher competitive advantage wins. Out of frustration or lack of funds, some either fold up when they can no longer sustain themselves or start compromising their values to just access funding. Are you in this category or you know someone, well, the world needs more people to do good and there is no need to fold up when you can build a more sustainable model. This is why ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ has become a more sustainable way to drive social change. The idea is that, you have a business model where people pay for a service or product you can offer, and then, you use the profit for your social impact courses. Unlike Businesses where the profit most times is shared by shareholders, in Social Entrepreneurship, the profit is used for community development purposes. Social Entrepreneurship gives you a wider option on how to sustain your idea. 🚀 If you didn’t know that a for-profit cannot own a nonprofit, but a nonprofit can own a for-profit, you’re not alone. We’re going to get into it today. I recently attended a nonprofit seminar at a business school in Michigan, where I got to dive deep into how to start and run nonprofits. As I’m considering launching my own nonprofit to help entrepreneurs offset the costs of business and sales development services, I was excited to connect with others who share this passion for giving back. While there, I met a dynamic entrepreneur who owns a production company that helps creatives—dancers, singers, and fine artists—offset production costs. She shared her dream of owning a building to generate revenue for her nonprofit, instead of always hunting for grants. 💡 As I listened to her, I felt compelled to share the idea of a nonprofit owning an LLC to manage a building, acquire business credit, sell goods/services, and generate revenue to fund nonprofit activities. (Note: Not an attorney or accountant here, just sharing insights!) The Grade 11 Entrepreneurship class was asked by @teambreadandbeyond to help ramp up their organisation. On December 9, the class presented their research and plans to one of the Founding Director of Bread and Beyond, to Kirstie Jagoe, on how her non-profit could improve. The first group focused on how social media could be utilized to recruit volunteers and partners. Others provided information on how to help the organisation keep volunteers safe. Another group presented their research on CNESST rules, and with help of Selwyn's Human Resources Manager, Ms. Notari, offered guidance on how best to manage volunteers. Finally, two groups of boys presented their ideas for how the non-profit could partner with different foundations to increase their funding to aid in the reduction of food insecurity. The boys really enjoyed the project, and Bread and Beyond was excited with the ideas that were presented. We look forward to seeing them in action as we follow Bread and Beyond going forward!
