The UK construction industry is facing a significant skill shortage, worsening with time. Currently experiencing a net loss of 50,000 workers annually, key losses are predominantly among older workers in specialist fields and are despite 31,000 new apprentice starts every year. Addressing these skill shortages is critical not just for the construction industry’s health but also in meeting broader governmental pledges; building 1.5 million new homes and a substantial transition towards net-zero emissions. The UK construction industry’s demographic challenges require urgent action to address skill shortages in order to support growth. At Newham College of Further Education we work with businesses to provide apprenticeship training to meet the needs of industry and help to introduce the next generation of specialist employees in these key sectors of the construction industry and others. This was highlighted in our latest OFSTED report, in which we were recognised for making a 'strong contribution to meeting skills needs'. Great article. A fresh new approach is required with less competive tendering, longer frameworks and strategic gov support during economic challenges to make construction careers sustainable, attractive and a positive life choice. The European model is not new and was the UK model up to 1990 with apprenticeships and on job mentoring costed in to every business / build project and supported by well resourced and funded technical colleges from early teens.

Construction Trainee, Joe, has spoken to us about his experience on the Traineeship and what his plans are for the future 👇 "I went to sixth form before the traineeship, I did design technology, business, and psychology. I went to sixth form to see my friends but I never really wanted to go to university, I wanted to do more hands-on work so construction kind of suits that. After the traineeship I hope to gain an apprenticeship, and hopefully open my own business later on in life. I have started the last trade, joinery. I’ve tried all the other trades; I want to go through with joinery. It’s been good, along with teaching they let you get on and learn from your mistakes, which is how I learn because it's more memorable. It’s been good. The benefits of doing the traineeship are you learn the basic skills before going out on site, so you find out how to use these skills sooner. The skills I have learned from this traineeship are bricklaying in general, like plumb gauge level, and in roofing, how to put up slats on roofs and stuff like that. My favourite part of this traineeship is the fact that you are allowed to get on with what you’re doing, that suits me.
