On June 30, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed the Packaging Waste and Cost Reduction Act into law, which requires producers to cover the costs of recycling their packaging. The law aims to reduce waste and encourage sustainable practices. Minnesota is the fifth state to approve an extended producer responsibility (EPR) program, joining California, Maine, Oregon and Colorado. A producer responsibility organization will be appointed by January, with producers eventually covering up to 90% of recycling costs by 2031. Renaissance Moms is deeply committed to combatting climate change and protecting our planet from pollution and products that pose health and safety risks to people and our ecosystems. That's why we support Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). "EPR is a policy approach that assigns producers greater responsibility for the end-of-life management of the products they introduce to the market and encourages innovations in product design." (source: https://lnkd.in/etbbR8Tk) Are you ready to hold plastic producers responsible for the harm their products cause? Tell your governor IN ONE CLICK to enact this legislation in your state. ➡ https://lnkd.in/e86eUDD5 ⬅ According to PIRG, Maine, California, Colorado and Oregon have already passed producer responsibility laws for packaging, and 17 states have introduced other producer responsibility bills. Benefits of Producer Responsibility Laws: 1️⃣ Shifts the burden of waste management from taxpayers to the producers of the waste. 2️⃣ Can require producers to physically collect their products at the end of their use if they aren't readily recyclable or can require producers to pay fees based on their products' negative impact that would fund the proper collection and disposal of their products. 3️⃣ Encourages producers to reduce overall costs by creating a more efficient system. 4️⃣ Incentivizes producers to design products that have minimal environmental impact throughout their life cycle starting with the raw materials and feedstocks used in production, 5️⃣ Incentivizes producers to maximize reuse, recycling, and reduction opportunities.
