What’s behind the interest in carbon handprints? Could they replace carbon footprints? And what would it mean if they did?   Currently, businesses that are serious about climate protection tend to measure the negative environmental impact of their business and follow the international standards of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol to do so.   But what if there were another way? Is there an argument for shifting our focus onto the positive impact of our business models and actions?   In my latest article, I look at carbon footprints, carbon handprints and other tools that help us understand the biggest sustainability issues in packaging. 🌍 Packaging and Climate Change: Connecting the Dots 📦 We're all familiar with the major contributors to climate change: transportation, energy production, and even our dietary habits. A report by Material Economics and EMF reveals that packaging materials contribute to a staggering 45% of global emissions. Despite this, discussions on sustainable packaging often miss the mark on addressing climate change directly. Major companies, despite sustainability commitments, often overlook the link between packaging and climate goals. It's time to integrate these efforts. Packaging materials, regardless of composition, entail resource extraction and waste, both resulting in emissions. So, how can companies bridge this gap? 🔍 Integrate packaging goals with climate goals. Folding these objectives together not only streamlines efforts but also highlights the direct impact on emissions reduction. 🏷️ Label packaging with carbon information. Consumers need to understand the environmental impact of products beyond recycling. Carbon footprint labels can make these impacts visible, fostering trust and informed choices. EVOLVE 2030 considers greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, landfill waste, and fluorinated organic compound emission intensities during manufacture as well as life cycle climate impact, social impact, and risks to human health and the environment. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) remains a core part of our identity and we aim to balance every business decision with ESG consideration.
