If you are an educator who knows it all, ignore this. If you are the one who wants to be challenged, this book is a must read. Importantly, if you are doing something that can serve as a good reflection for yourself and others, please document. There is a serious dearth of Indian literature on institution-building. I hope this will change in the next 5 years. And hopefully we will write a book on Rishihood.

I happened to pick up this book from the Rishihood University library : "Building the Intentional University: Minerva and the Future of Higher Education." This was recommended by our co-founder Sahil Aggarwal to the library. The foundational questions we ask at Rishihood University resonate deeply with those the founders of Minerva University have mentioned in the book. The challenge of constructing a university from scratch offers a unique opportunity to question and redefine every aspect of higher education. It compels us to delve into the curriculum from first principles: "What we teach and why." This exploration is not merely academic; it is a quest to understand the most effective way to structure the learning journey, deciding meticulously what to include, what to exclude, and how to deliver an education that is both timeless and timely. At Rishihood University, we are committed to designing a foundation curriculum that not only imparts knowledge but also cultivates the attributes of leadership in our graduates. The essential question we ask is: What are the attributes of leaders we wish to see in our graduates, and how can we distill these attributes into a comprehensive blend of knowledge, skills, and attitudes? This question guides us in crafting our foundational courses, aiming to equip our students not just with information, but with the wisdom to navigate and influence the world. Moreover, the question of "How do we teach what we teach?" remains ever relevant. We must constantly innovate on the most impactful ways to impart knowledge, ensuring it resonates with and empowers our learners. Reading this book has provided a structured framework to navigate these complex but crucial questions. I am eager to learn from others who have been on this path. As of today, I wrapped my first semester teaching at the Isenberg School of Management, UMass Amherst. This term also marks my 15th year as a professor. Admittedly, the last few years nearly broke me in higher ed, and I was starting to question my career path. After a short break, I returned to the classroom in an adjunct capacity and it was everything I needed to fall back in love with my craft. I had the honor of teaching an incredible group of smart, talented, hard-working #business majors who not only leveled up to meet my (admittedly high) expectations, but immersed themselves in research, writing, stats, and leadership practices to produce real-world projects that will impact how organizations communicate and thrive. More importantly, I think they all knew how much I cared. Not only about their academic and professional success, but about their personal development into flexible, adaptable, and advisable humans who will change the world. ------- A huge thanks to my 310 students for trusting me with your education and permitting me to push you to think and learn differently. Thank you for making such an imprint on my heart, too. And, a huge shout out to my amazing Business Communications Program colleagues. Dr. Jeffrey McClellan gave tips and insights into improving advising programs in today's webinar, "Assessing Your Advising Model to have Greater Influence and Impact on Your Campus." He shared a story about a student who had dropped out of college twice and was struggling to define a life path. One academic advisor made the difference by believing in and supporting her. The student committed to a major, took on student leadership positions and graduated with honors. When done well, academic advising can truly change a student's life. How do you create an advising model that supports this high quality advising? Dr. McClellan recommends starting with careful strategic planning when re-designing or improving your advising approach and model. The work creates space for excellence in advising and pays dividends in student success.
