Interesting Job Requirement! I saw this item under "Required Experience", in a job posting for a Software Engineering Manager: "Ability to reverse engineer system requirements based on existing systems and architectures." What, exactly, would that experience look like? Does it give you any opinions about the company's Engineering Dept? #jobpostings #softwareengineering #systemarchitecture

What can you anticipate if you decide to pursue a career in either people management or software architecture (Individual Contributors)? 🙅♂️ People Manager: People managers, often referred to as team leads, or managers are responsible for leading and overseeing a team of individuals. Their primary focus is on managing the people, their performance, career growth, and well-being. ✔ Skills : People managers need strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. They must be adept at mentoring, coaching, and resolving conflicts among team members. ✔ Goal : Their goal is to ensure that the team meets its objectives, stays motivated, and works effectively together. 🔦 Software Architect: Software architects are primarily concerned with the high-level design and structure of software systems. They make key technical decisions, choose the right technologies, and design the software's overall architecture. ✔ Skills: Software architects need deep technical knowledge and expertise. They should be proficient in various programming languages, have a strong grasp of system design patterns, and be able to foresee potential technical challenges and solutions. ✔Goal: Their goal is to create a robust, scalable, and maintainable software system that aligns with the project's requirements and long-term vision. In summary, a people manager's role revolves around managing and leading a team of individuals, while a software architect focuses on the technical aspects of designing software systems. These roles can overlap in some organizations, where a software architect might also lead a team, but they have distinct core responsibilities and skill sets. I appreciate hearing your perspective and feedback. #technology #startups #engineering #software #softwarearchitecture #manager

Hiring a 10X Engineer isn't always best... When I say 10X Engineer, I mean an exceptional engineer who produces many time the output of an average engineer. Organizations are always on the lookout for 10X individuals because they can be the ingredients of a true dream team. But, it can be a trap. Firstly, because they're extremely rare, a 'unicorn candidate' as they're known. There simply isn't enough to go around for every company to hire a 10X Engineer. The second is subtler. There are many excellent people who, despite not being world class, can achieve 10X output in certain situations, but that output may not be replicated when they switch roles or companies. In other words, when you see an outsized output by an individual, on a CV for example, it's usually because they have many things working in their favour all at once to produce that impact. We actually see this as a positive. Such outsized input can actually be created within organizations by hiring the right people, in the right roles and leveraging their unique characteristics, which will allow excellent people to reach their highest performance. So next time you're waiting for that 10X Engineer to take your team to the next level, it's good to remember that a 10X Team arises when you've helped to arrange everything in a way so that multiple people on your team become 10X contributors all at once. A 10X Team firing on all cylinders is more valuable than a single 10X Engineer. ___________________________________________________________ 🚀 We're successfully scaling development teams right now, just like yours, using the power of effective communication. 💌 DM if you think we might be able to help you too. 📩 kieran@placerecruitment.uk

What's the career path of a “technical architect"? In some cultures career progression requires becoming a manager, which is tricky because not all high performing individual contributors (ICs), have the will and skill to become high performing managers. I’ve discussed the concept of IC career pathing with a few peers recently and from senior engineer to “principle engineer" to “architect" and eventually to “distinguished engineer" there seem to be at least three common sub-tracks, which may blend in different ways: a) Deep Skill So this is like a being a deep domain IC in something like data bases, or AI, distributed systems, an applied skill like prototyping/technical exploration, or solving super hard problems. Examples: At Space X they had one engineer design the landing system until it worked. For iPhone 1.0 they have one developer for each major app--Phone, Music, Browser. Basically this is where one IC can deliver more efficiently and effectively than a team of engineer. b) Field CTO This is an industry authority who speaks at conferences, creates content, educational materials and basically elevates the brand of a company. This may or may not be paired with sales engineering/evangelism/dev rel skillset to also solution on problems with prospects and customers from an architectural level about the company's offerings. Someone like Cassie Kozyrkov comes to mind here from her time at Google. c) Architectural Review Authority This is kind of a "wise OG" role. It’s someone who has the IQ, EQ, history and organizational and architectural context to work with engineering leaders and teams to avoid technical debt, duplication and complexity by reviewing technical proposals and approaches from across a company. Engineering teams focused on specific goals may unintentionally end up over-optimizing for near term or local contexts, while causing company-wide issues. There are probably more sub-tracks and variations. The important thing is ensuring systems are in place to enable each of these functions to perform to their potential.
