Yesterday was my 49th birthday, and it got me thinking about my journey as an older neurodivergent woman in tech.
When I first entered the tech field, the landscape was vastly different. Diversity and inclusion were not the buzzwords they are today, and neurodiversity was rarely, if ever, acknowledged. I found myself masking my quirks, trying to fit into a mold that wasn't designed for me. However, as time passed, I realised that my unique perspective and problem-solving abilities were not weaknesses but strengths that set me apart.
As an older woman in tech, I've faced my fair share of ageism and gender bias. But I refuse to let these stereotypes define me. My age brings with it a wealth of knowledge, adaptability, and the ability to mentor and guide the next generation of tech professionals, as well as the knowledge that I still have things to learn from them.
Being neurodivergent has taught me to embrace my differences and use them to my advantage. My ability to think outside the box, hyperfocus on tasks, and approach problems from unconventional angles has been invaluable in my career. I've learned to advocate for myself and others, pushing for accommodations and fostering a more inclusive workplace.
To my fellow neurodivergent women in tech, especially those who are older, I want to say this: Your experiences, your insights, and your unique way of thinking are needed in this industry. Don't be afraid to speak up, stand out, and challenge the status quo. Your voice matters, and your contributions are invaluable.
Let's continue to support one another, share our stories, and pave the way for a more diverse and inclusive tech industry. Together, we can create a future where every individual, regardless of age, gender, or neurodiversity, can thrive and make their mark in the world of technology.
