Great article! I also loved that you included other, relatively recent, experiences. The reality is that this issue is very far reaching, from bridges and dams to railroads, and we are seeing incidents like these for their equivalent infrastructure in places globally but there are plenty examples in the US alone. Further, you discussed that it would take until 2071 to finish the repairs needed at the current rate of investment and I truly think that people need to sit with that number for a minute as the article is only discussing bridges because we have allowed our critical infrastructure to reach this point. I also loved that you included actions that could enhance resilience for the bridges, both in additional physical infrastructure and in coordination, as we saw similar issues with lack of communication/coordination and physical infrastructure after the Greek railway disaster last year, with strikes of trains and ferries occurring this year as well because the level of impact that had on the citizens of Greece. Overall, your article was very well written with several extremely important points for policy-makers and voters alike to understand. Looking forward to your next update.

We think there is always work to do on improving communications between local authorities and the public. Apart from the obvious-knowing more about how their council tax is being spent-the majority want to know why it is being spent in a certain way and what the benefits are. As reflected in many of the political parties in their election manifestos this week, highways and transport comes near the top of the public's agenda hen it comes to key talking points during the run up to any election-local or national. When people ask me about upcoming major infrastructure projects and improvements, I always let them know that the inconvenience of roadway construction is well worth the improvements when everything is completed.

$2.1B investment in Columbia, SC’s malfunction junction. It needs it. The South Carolina Dept. of Transportation is untangling a congested, complicated knot of an interstate corridor, aiming to change the so-called “malfunction junction” into the safe, modern and smooth-traveling Carolina Crossroads. The ambitious, $2.1-billion project is the largest the state has ever undertaken—as it overhauls the corridor of Interstates 20, 26 and 126 in Columbia in a redesign to prioritize safety and traffic flow on the most congested portion of highway in South Carolina’s Midlands region.

Replacing and upgrading aging infrastructure is crucial for ensuring public safety and boosting economic efficiency.
