This week, Grant Thornton proudly participated as a Gold Sponsor in the Athens Riviera Summit 2024, organized by Athens Riviera Forum, where leaders of both the domestic and the global economy exchanged their valuable views on Athens Riviera’s investment perspectives and future growth strategies. During the 3rd Day of the event, our organization was represented by Nick Frydas, Principal, Energy Sector, who joined the insightful panel discussion “Paving the Future: Energizing Alliances or Alliances in Energy”, focusing on how strategic alliances in the energy sector can drive future innovations and sustainability. During the session, panelists discussed the role of collaborations in enhancing energy efficiency, developing renewable energy projects, and addressing the challenges posed by climate change, helping attendees further understand the future energy landscape. #GrantThonrton #AthensRivieraSummit2024 #AthensRivieraForum

Why is it important to believe that tomorrow is going to be better than today? Since 2008, for many in the UK, and beyond went from one of a mindset of growth, to one of austerity and uncertainty as the global banking system went into collapse. Then we had Brexit and were told it will definitely get worse before it gets better. Then we had Covid. Then legitimate threats of climate change became front and centre. Then high inflation, and now the new government has told us it will get worse before it will get better. If you are under the age of 20, most of your conscious dialogue about the future is one of systems failing and bleak outlooks. Guess what. We havent been as boyant or performing so well. If we keep promoting this outlook and narrative it puts us in danger if believing that tomorrow wont be better, and maybe this is as good as its gets. It is easy to slip into a hope strategy. This is a not a good a good place to be as a nation, as business leaders, investors, a society, or as a person. The reality is there is a lot of progress already happening on many levels. Energy, construction, farming, management systems capable of integrating multiple core objectives, and mass innovation at scale. Its not all gloom. There is a lot to get behind and build on. Governments, leaders, investors, entrepreneurs, and society have the means, capability, and the opportunity to accelerate our progress. There is a long way to go, but we can create a future for tomorrow and the next generation that is better than today. Something we can all do is change the narrative to a more progressive one. Humans do better when we unite around something positive in a constructive manner and solving problems. #transformation #sustainability #managementsystems #leadership

UK shuts down coal power plant. Steals away long term LNG supply contracts from poorer countries like Pakistan on the spot market. UK's left irrationally shun nuclear power which makes its clean energy transition trickier. UK, Europe could require less base power like for manufacturing, if they embrace outsourcing production to China, India etc. While, matching USA's anti China, Chinese sentiments can seriously harm UK. For instance, half of the world's steel supply comes from China while UK's own steel sector is in woeful shape. To be a rich, prosperous country, requires having lots of cheap, reliable power. UK is one of those rare countries where wind power is most feasible. Despite this, its wind output capacity is 13 times smaller than that of China. The worst possible outcome is rich world using up majority of all LNG (fossil fuel) while moralizing poor countries like Pakistan, threatening us with financial reprimand, sanction if we tried to replicate France deriving 70% of its electricity from nuclear, and/or turned to our local Thar Coal resource to alleviate foreign loan burden. And if the developed world wants to see solar take off like in rural Pakistan, there will need to be generous cheap financing for centralised solar (that is more efficient, easier to maintain). Hydro, Nuclear for now remain a more reliable renewable energy mix than solar, wind. Solar has more potential than wind (which is extra tricky logistically).

What lessons can South Africa learn from the UK’s transition to #cleanenergy as it looks to expedite its #justenergytransition ? In the 1980’s the UK derived more than 80% of its electricity from coal; a number is now down to less than 1%. Looking forward to seeing what will come out of #SDIM24

Coal fuelled the industrial revolution. We didn't know about climate change; we saw a lot of poverty and the opportunity for economic change. Does this closing of the last UK coal plant now mean a further push for a sustainable future? A postive step into something better? #climateaction
