For many youth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, safe and accessible green space can be hard to come by — an unfortunate circumstance, considering the plethora of health benefits that accompany time spent in nature. But Prescribe Outside, a partnership fostered by the Nature Everywhere Communities initiative, aims to bridge that gap. By providing physicians and families with tools to locate and use public green spaces, Prescribe Outside is working to improve the health and wellness of Philadelphia children. For a city in which up to one in three children live in poverty, removing barriers to accessing nature’s benefits for children and families is crucial. And from a statistical perspective, Philadelphia is not lacking in green space. Ninety-five percent of city residents can walk to a park within 10 minutes from where they live, and the city boasts 10,797 acres of parkland. We need a third place... I don't mean web 3.0 or we need to get the bronze medal, but a third physical place. In sociology, the third place refers to the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home and the workplace. I remember, when I was growing up, my dad had these three places. He had his home, his work and his local pub/club. And, this is probably why he had a happy life - two years ago, in his eulogy I pointed this out and that he was never interested in material wealth. I didn't go to the pub a lot with him because I have never really drunk. On the occasions I did, I sat there and I got it. I could see that everyone there knew him and everyone looked out for everyone. He even mixed his second and third place by working behind the bar... possibly for a bit of extra cash, but it was more likely so he could chat with more people. A lot of people these days have two places (work and home), or if you're working from home 100% of the time you may only have one place. This can put internal strains on you that you might not realise are there, as we are social animals. Examples of third places include churches, cafes, bars, clubs, community centres, public libraries, gyms, bookstores, maker-spaces, and parks. Recently, to try and get a third place by getting out more to meet clients, and friends at coffee shops, I have started playing football on Friday evening, and volunteering at the local community energy project. I didn't know this was a thing until earlier this week, but it makes complete sense, especially looking back when I was very living and working in a single place. Working from home is great, but as long as you are using some of your evening and weekends to be part of something outside of your home. #ThirdSpace #Community #MentalHealth

What is community weaving In the practice of Community Weaving, individuals learn from Master Weavers who share their experiences and instruct them in the utilization of tools, techniques, and technology to cultivate their own social support networks within various spheres such as schools, neighborhoods, organizations, and businesses. Like-minded individuals, termed Good Neighbors, collaborate to establish shared resources such as furniture warehouses, childcare cooperatives, clothing exchanges, and community gardens. Additionally, they organize recreational activities like rafting trips, campouts, ropes courses, barbecues, softball games, paintball competitions, and vision quests. Furthermore, Community Weaving facilitates community improvement initiatives through the application of FSN technology, spearheading endeavors such as the closure of problematic venues, disaster response, establishment of neighborhood watch programs, fundraising for beautification projects, revitalization efforts, and the incubation of new businesses. To support these endeavors, local organizations such as the American Red Cross, Public Health Department, schools, faith leaders, businesses, and various civic, social service, and youth organizations are enlisted as FSN Partners. They provide essential resources such as free space for activities, access to speakers and educational materials, and complimentary trainings for FSN volunteers. Loneliness is certainly something that we as a society need to confront and address. It is also something that councils can play a key role in. Very interesting to see the over 90% incidence of loneliness in 18 to 29 year olds. Community centres, libraries, small events, coffee meets, community outreach services, transport services - can we do better? City of Unley volunteer services do a great job. And there are many residents who care about their neighbours and their wellbeing. I've seen some amazing street parties in Parkside (Halloween, christmas) and dog parks are hubs for social connection. In fact, without dogs, I'm sure loneliness stats would be higher. I've had a great conversation with council staff about how to address loneliness and learnt about some ongoing work by SA councils in this area. Social prescription, as used in the UK - where GPs identify that some "frequent flyer" patients don't need more medicine,they need more social connection.
