We see employers of physicians that will ask you to sign a nonbinding and relatively bare-bones offer letter, start credentialing you, play hide-the-contract, and then send you a gnarly contract several months later. That contract could have a you-have-to-leave-town noncompete that was never disclosed to you, an equivalently punitive nonsolicit, inappropriate term, termination, and malp tail clauses, among other issues… however, it’s now July 31 and you have a 3-digit bank account because you are waiting on your job to start on the 1st… it’s next to impossible to walk away, and you can get trapped into something you never expected. This is why we highly recommend you contact a lawyer who knows what they are doing with these contracts at the offer letter stage! I've been working with a Dr. who graduated recently and wanted to share some of the questions she asked me that I see a lot of new graduates have when stepping into the world of Locums. Topic: Getting Started w/ Locums 1.      What initial paperwork is needed to get started with locum tenens? -To start working with CompHealth, the only paperwork needed is your current CV. Your recruiter will ask you some pre-qualifying questions and send you an online application to fill out. We will also send you our CompHealth agreement stating the terms on how we will work together to find you an amazing opportunity. 2.      If I need to get licensed in another state, how would that process work? -We can help cover licensing costs and guide you through the process and paperwork needed for each state. a.    Would the agency assist me with that process and  How long does that process typically take? -Absolutely. I work directly with a fantastic licensing team and they will walk us through the different processes and timelines for obtaining a license in the state you are interested in . 3.      Once I have that initial paperwork submitted, what happens next? -We can present you to any and all of the job opportunities you are interested in and are qualified for!   4.      How long does it typically take to book a locums job once I apply? - Can vary and we will talk about timelines for the specific jobs we are presenting you for. 5.      What locums advice or tips do you have for new grads? Flexibility is key! Your first assignment, may not be your dream one, but getting your foot in the door and trying new short term experiences while having an open mind is what locums is all about. I love LinkedIn because it enables us, the players, to learn from new developments, research, and technology and also to learn from the mistakes we all make and honestly disclose so others won't make them. The story below reminds me of the importance of checking out references to see if they are factual and to check out the credentials of professionals in all fields in your managerial role. In a previous role as State Operations manager for St John Ambulance, two registered nurses joined us as volunteers. One was in intensive care at St Andrews Hospital and the other in Emergency at the Brisbane Hospital at Herston so I dutifully phoned to check their background. In both cases, they had failed to present their certification to me and indicated copies were with the hospital HR department so I asked both hospitals to check their files and send me a copy. Embarrassed management phoned back and said that neither had produced certification for them as well. On investigation, it was revealed that they had attended uni classes but were never accepted as students. This shift threatens the foundation of our healthcare system, leading to increased downstream costs and a lack of continuity of care.
