Our workshop took place last week as expected. Participants were able to discuss with the consortium about the supply chain and potential markets. Group discussions allowed to exchanched about target markets for silica, hydrogen and silicon. A SWOT analysis was then performed on the capacity to reach markets. Finally, the supply was presented, and the discussion covered its current and potential challenges. In the meantime, posters presenting the 4 project pilots were discussed in details by the respective responsibles (ROSI, ReSiTec AS, LuxChemtech GmbH and NOSI). I delighted to share that Elkem will be attending the International Colloquium on Refractories in Aachen next month (18-19 September). There will a few interesting topics being presented by myself and my colleague Dr. Hong Peng: 1) Novel binder for no cement castables: A comprehensive evaluation of mechanical strength and hot properties - by Dr. Hong Peng. In this study a newly developed binder system called SioxX-Ten is introduced which enhance the intermediate temperature properties of no cement castables. 2) Evaluating the use of hydrogel as accelerator for no-cement refractory shotcreting - a higher performance alternative - by Dr. Izak Cameron. In this study we assess the use of hydrogels derived from biopolymers as potential alkali-free alternative accelerators for no-cement shotcreting to address some of the drawbacks with using conventional NCC shotcreting accelerators such as aluminium sulphate. 3) Investigating the use of sugar alcohol as an alternative non-toxic binder to conventional coal tar/coal tar pitch for use in taphole clay - by Dr. Izak Cameron. In this study a combination binder consisting of glycerine and phenolic resole resin was evaluated against a model binder (coal tar) which is characterized based on compositions, thermal and rheological properties. Ongoing research and the development of new synthesis techniques are key to unlocking the full potential of nanocomposites as revolutionary additives in lubricants.
