The rampant commodification of phonics holding hands with political dogma has led to this. “But it works” is not an excuse for the incessant hours of phonics catch-ups and interventions that seem to batter childhood and have almost single-handedly led to the erosion of time and space for children to feel alive with the joy of who they are. Ramming phonics down children’s throats from Day One in the name of Life Chances and all the other Empty Speak of the Adult World is what I call ‘Fred-washing’, putting all the focus on children’s performance rather than where our real focus should be - the cultural vandalism brought by austerity, the slash and burn of Sure Start and the deliberate promotion of free marketism that allowed Big Corps Phonics to eradicate free, effective resources and excessively profit from fear. We are deflected from the politics and deliberately so… And yes, reading is a life skill, and yes it is alchemy to pass the gift of reading onto children, but what price must childhood pay for the breakneck, foot to floor-ism that seem to be more about forcing children to read rather than bringing them into the sunlight of reading? ‘High expectations’ does not need to mean ‘crushing the soul out of children’ - it never has, yet the Adult World seems to insist it has to. It is WILD that people cannot see how joy has to be the first knowledge and that children need to feel something about what they are learning. Without joy, phonics is a dead gift. There are great phonics companies out there, we know this, and you will who know they are. And how? Because the light in your children’s eyes will tell you, as will your own soul if it burns with the joy of handing on the gift the moment you tell them it’s time for phonics… “It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism” said the late Mark Fisher, and we might say the same about synthetic phonics - is there another way to share the joy of reading? Is there another dream that we can have for childhood? I’d love to hear your thoughts 🙏🏻 👧🏻👦🏾not🤖🤖

International Early Years Education Consultant, Founder of Readit2, Discovery Packs, Waldon Therapist, Early Years Coaching, Lifestyle/Well-being coach
Thank you Greg Bottrill - when I started teaching in Hackney in the early 1980s we used a range of methods to teach our children to read - phonics was the last tool we would choose and only if the others didn’t work - there are generations of ‘literate’ adults who did not have phonics ‘thrown down their throats’ from pre-school to year 6 on a daily basis. They had stories read (and told) to them at home on a daily basis, from birth, so they knew them by heart and told their parents off when they skipped a page!. It was an emotional bond which many recollect today with great affection. I noticed that as life got ‘faster/busier’ - or should I say the immediacy of the screen took over, (technoference was a ‘thing’) children seemed to be the ones who lost out - they started getting less of that warm emotionally close story time as there was a misunderstanding that the story was all it was and a device could replace the loving emotional moment - but it can’t and it doesn’t - which was why I created Readit2 - training adults to inspire children to love to read and learn - to find the joy - because when you enjoy something you WANT to do it more - it’s how devices have been created too - let’s create a movement to remind everyone that that super wonderful experience of snuggling up with a book is the pre-curser to being a literacy oriented pre/schooler (Don Holdaway 1978) - these children become readers so easily …. ##earlychildhood #earlyyears #eyfs #parenting #screenfreechildhood #smartphonefreechildhood#reading #traumainformed

Calling all Biology teachers (middle- and high school) from all around the world. Pedro Nieto and I are working on a full-encompassing ed-tech solution for middle- and high schools. We are building subject by subject and are set to test the first iteration of a different subject in schools in the coming weeks. However, while that is happening, we are looking to learn everything there is to know about teaching Biology: - What are you as a teacher struggling with? - How does that struggle translate into student struggle? - What are students often struggling with? (even though I am studying Bio myself, getting a lot of different opinions matters) But most importantly: How can we help you by solving all those issues? If you help us build exactly what you need by sharing your experiences, we will offer the final product to you completely for free! You can schedule a meeting with us at https://lnkd.in/eWvcT4yx or reach me at tjalling@uni.minerva.edu or at team@youcademy.dev ! Thank you! Ps. For those in the education space: please react for extra reach :) Thank you!

We're celebrating great texts for teaching and learning during Book Week! Today: Eww Gross: Foul facts and putrid pictures by Dan Marshall. In the Space chapter we learn that there is poo and other forms of waste left on the moon. In Earth we discover that poo can be used to build homes. In Humans we are reliably informed that it is possible to pee without pooing, but you can’t poo without peeing, as well as the slightly gross fact that our bones are wet. In Animals you may be startled to know that jellybeans are made with insect poo and that baby koalas eat their mum’s poo. Finally we get to the serious topic of Science and discover that...having a poo transplant can help to cure gastrointestinal infections. Fortunately, the book is not all about poo (but it does feature a lot!). It will appeal to primary aged readers curious to learn more about the world we live in. While the book uses humour and gross facts to engage the reader it is also a powerful way to investigate the how and why of a range of scientific ideas. In addition to over 200 pages of gross information the book also offers suggested experiments and investigations to explore some of the ideas further. As a mentor text the book provides a model of ways to organise and share information to effectively create meaning and to engage the reader. Volume 18, Issue 2 - Serial Number 64, June 2022 Title: School for Children: A Phenomenological Study Authors: Amir Abedi Ghadi, Keyvan Salehi DOI: 10.22051/jontoe.2021.27899.2811 Abstract: Recent years have witnessed an increased emphasis on the need for stakeholders’ participation in the design of school environments. This descriptive phenomenological study used stratified sampling to analyze the perception of the third to sixth grade students of four schools. To this end, an essay was assigned to the students who were asked to complete the unfinished sentence “I would like to study in a school that ...”. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi strategy. In order to increase the dependability, verifiability, reliability and accuracy of the data, the methods of "inspection and review at the time of coding", "using the opinions of research colleagues and verifying them", "explaining the exact details of the data collection and analysis process", "long-term engagement", triangulation and negative case analysis were used. The findings indicated that the majority of students were dissatisfied with the current state of schools, that is, schools did not provide them with a pleasant environment. Hence, the results of this study can be effective in making schools more pleasant.
