If you have questions about DEI, it’s okay to ask people with disabilities, as long as you do it respectfully. Seeking guidance from people with disabilities is important because by doing so, we foster a more inclusive and understanding environment. The bottom line is that we can’t learn without asking. When we allow the fear of doing the wrong thing to take precedence, it often leads to inaction, which is problematic because it hinders progress. This podcast is not specifically about technical content accessibility, but content supports this technology. This episode reminds me that technical content creators need to be mindful of how content is presented to people with impairments and disabilities, how a solution or benefit is framed, how is that content accessed and can it be accessed by multiple methods, and how long does it take a person to easilyfind content. When we don’t create content for all we are not providing enough. Also, when we don’t make content easy to access and use, then we aren’t just affecting the individual, which in itself is important, we are affecting productivity for ourselves and our clients.

There is a stigma that people with disabilities are less than. But in reality, people with disabilities are capable, hardworking, and intelligent. There is no reason to believe that these individuals cannot excel as much as anyone else. As advocates and allies, we must continue to work towards breaking down the stigma. In this episode of the Play Therapy Podcast, I address a question from Marian in Ireland regarding the Touchstone story, a method sometimes used in initial therapy sessions. While acknowledging the intention behind the Touchstone story, I delve into why it doesn't align with child-centered play therapy principles. Instead, I propose ways to achieve similar goals through child-centered approaches. I emphasize the importance of creating a safe and comfortable environment for children in their initial sessions, focusing on building rapport and trust. I also discuss how to approach the topic of parental involvement and sharing information with children, emphasizing the child's autonomy and the therapist's role in facilitating a positive therapeutic experience. #playtherapy #podcast https://lnkd.in/epgYypGg
