🌟 Exciting News from the NRC! 🌟 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has officially updated its mission statement to reflect its evolving role in supporting the future of nuclear energy. The new mission statement: 📜 "The NRC protects public health and safety and advances the nation’s common defense and security by enabling the safe and secure use and deployment of civilian nuclear energy technologies and radioactive materials through efficient and reliable licensing, oversight, and regulation for the benefit of society and the environment." Chairman David Wright highlighted this pivotal change, stating: 📣 “Congress has directed the NRC to be an enabler to nuclear technologies while staying true to the core principles laid out in the Atomic Energy Act. This updated mission statement meets that intent.” This update reflects the NRC’s commitment to balancing safety, innovation, and efficiency while fostering the growth of nuclear technologies for societal and environmental benefit. Together, we’re charting a future where nuclear energy plays a vital role in sustainable progress. 💡🌍 The future of energy is here - let’s seize it together! https://lnkd.in/gDu6HzEi #NuclearEnergy #MissionUpdate #Regulation #Innovation #CleanEnergy #TurquoisePower

Appreciate the opportunity provided by Breaking Defense to counter blatant misinformation from Prof Alan Kuperman and the Nuclear Prevention Proliferation Project (LBJ School The University of Texas at Austin) about initiatives underway for nuclear power to meet national security needs for resilient energy. We welcome a public discussion on advanced nuclear power with the NPPP at any future forum. More importantly, while we understand the intent of the NPPP endowment to help combat the spread of nuclear weapons, we question the lack of scholarly analysis and peer review in the positions proffered by the NPPP. Hope we will be able to rectify this in future articles and engagement. Does the LBJ School entertain a range of views? Brian McCormack Jim Howe Jeffrey "Jeff" C. Crater L. I’ve long been a proponent of the government enabling nuclear growth by serving as first-movers. Not only is nuclear energy the only real option for ensuring reliable, resilient, and clean off-grid power for military bases, it’s a great option for many of the DOE’s 17 national labs and other critical government facilities for the same national security and energy security purposes. Long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) and mandates (such as those already in statute for renewable power) can enable government use of advanced nuclear reactors. The government should follow the path being set by data center developers and hyperscalers to meet their growing energy demands with #nuclearenergy.

On May 29, the White House announced new steps to bolster the domestic nuclear industry and to advance America’s clean energy future, including the creation of a Nuclear Power Project Management and Delivery Working Group. The group will develop action plans to support the demonstration and deployment of advanced reactor technologies, make permitting processes more efficient and effective, secure and expand the nuclear fuel supply, strengthen nuclear safety, security, and safeguards, and support an ambitious strategy to ensure the nation’s nuclear leadership. On June 17th, Department of Energy Secretary Granholm doubled down - "Those are big goals, so let me say it loud and clear: Carbon-free nuclear power is an absolutely critical part of our decarbonization equation." The "huge potential" of advanced reactors is why the DOE's FY 2025 budget request includes nearly $700 million to drive a wide range of these kinds of technologies forward. $245 million to support the demonstration of two advanced reactors within the next seven years; another $305 million to develop and demonstrate additional advanced designs by the mid-2030s; and $145 million to build the Versatile Test Reactor - the first fast test reactor in over 20 years. We believe more should be done. #UCANPower has drafted a comprehensive Presidential Executive Order galvanizing and focusing executive agency actions to partner with the domestic nuclear industry on restoration of U.S. leadership globally. This document can serve as a roadmap for the WH working group. We’ll discuss our recommendation at the 2nd Annual Nuclear Energy Security Summit in Washington DC on June 26/27. According to a recently conducted 2024 National Nuclear Energy Public Opinion Survey, favorable public opinion of nuclear energy continues at a record high. For four years in a row, more than three-fourths of the U.S public said that they favored the use of nuclear energy. The more people know about nuclear energy, the more they strongly favor it to meet our Nation's growing demand for reliable, clean energy.
