Spain has contracted Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace for the acquisition of NASAMS air defence systems. The agreement, valued at approximately EUR 410 million, is part of Spain's broader initiative to modernize its military capabilities. Spain's decision to invest in NASAMS highlights its commitment to strengthening national defence infrastructure amidst evolving global security challenges. The modernized systems will replace older equipment, providing Spain with enhanced capability to detect and neutralize aerial threats, ranging from aircraft to drones and other potential airborne hazards. The deal underscores the robust defence cooperation between Spain and Kongsberg. Geir Håøy, President and CEO of Kongsberg, expressed pride in Spain's continued trust in their systems, which have been integral to the country's defence for over two decades. The NASAMS (Norwegian Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System) is a state-of-the-art air defence solution co-developed by Kongsberg and Raytheon. Known for its advanced capabilities and high level of operational flexibility, NASAMS is employed by various nations worldwide, reflecting its reliability and effectiveness. Credit to Ministry of Defence, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory and The Rt Hon John Healey MP 20 October 2024 New air defence laser engages multiple missiles at once   - GOV.UK https://lnkd.in/g-_xPjZP ● Air protection laser defeats 100% of targets in live firing trial. ● Equipment being fitted to UK military aircraft to defeat missile threats.  ● Collaboration between Dstl scientists and UK industry partners help support 1950 jobs across Scotland.  RAF pilots are one step closer to being equipped with a cutting-edge laser self-protection system, following 100% successful live-fire trials.   The laser is being designed to be fitted to a range of RAF aircraft including the intelligence gathering Shadow R2 and A400M transporter, ready to rapidly detect and defeat threats such as missiles.   During the trial at the Vidsel Test Range in Sweden, the operational system defeated a range of infrared heat-seeking missiles being fired simultaneously.  100% of threats were quickly defeated using a laser with pinpoint accuracy, which has been designed and developed by the Team Pellonia partnership between Leonardo UK, Thales UK, and the MOD’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory.

The Philippines is taking a bold step forward in modernizing its air defense capabilities with plans to double its fleet of FA-50 Fighting Eagle supersonic combat aircraft. This strategic move, part of the country’s broader military modernization program, underscores its commitment to addressing regional security challenges. The acquisition of 12 additional FA-50s, valued at approximately $683.7 million, will significantly enhance the operational capacity of the Philippine Air Force. The FA-50, developed by Korea Aerospace Industries, has proven its versatility and effectiveness in various missions, including its notable role in the 2017 Marawi conflict. With advanced features such as a General Electric turbofan engine, a 20-millimeter gun, and the ability to carry air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, the FA-50 is a formidable asset. The upcoming Block 20 variant will further enhance its capabilities with aerial refueling, advanced radar systems, and beyond-visual-range missiles. Beyond the FA-50 acquisition, the Philippine Department of Defense is pursuing other modernization projects, including the procurement of Bell 412 EPX helicopters and A-29 Super Tucano light attack aircraft. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to national security, ensuring the Philippines is well-equipped to address both conventional and emerging threats. The doubling of the FA-50 fleet not only strengthens the Philippines’ defense posture but also sets a precedent for regional security. By investing in advanced military technology, the country is positioning itself as a key player in Southeast Asia’s defense landscape. The Forsvarsmateriell - Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency exercised a contract option to procure three additional TPY-4 radars from Lockheed Martin, bringing the new total to 11 of the ground-based multi-mission radars. The TPY-4, which has been coined “NATO’s eyes in the north”, also recently completed the Critical Design Review (CDR) confirming the radar design is meeting the program requirements. The TPY-4 radar system, a state-of-the-art multi-mission sensor, enhances the Forsvaret - Norwegian Armed Forces’s capability to detect, track, and classify aerial threats, providing critical situational awareness. “Lockheed Martin’s TPY-4 radars are crucial components of Norway’s defence and are the most suitable choice for supporting all-domain deterrence in the Nordic region,” said Chandra Marshall, Vice President Radar & Sensor Systems at Lockheed Martin. “The additional order and the completion of the CDR mark major steps forward, confirming that our radar meets the stringent requirements of NDMA and ensuring the security and sovereignty of Norway.” The relationship with Norwegian industry has been a critical element to the development of TPY-4. Lockheed Martin leveraged an extensive Norwegian supplier base making this program and other active international opportunities for TPY-4 a true U.S./Norwegian industry partnership. In particular, the relationship with Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA) resulted in the production of the first TPY-4 which included the Platform Electronics System (PES) built by KDA.
