Don't forget to join us TONIGHT for the last Friday Evening Lecture of 2024. “Expanding Health Insurance: What Does It Do and What Does That Mean?” featuring Amy Finkelstein, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. As always, MBL Friday Evening Lectures are free and open to the public. Can't come in person? Don't worry! We simulcast on zoom. mbl.edu/fel Lecture Abstract: Expanding health insurance has been a major policy focus in the U.S. from the Truman era to Obamacare. But what does expanding health insurance actually do for those who receive it, and how should future administrations prioritize further expansions relative to other policy goals, such as basic income support? This presentation will use the Oregon Health Insurance Experiment – a landmark randomized controlled trial of the impact of covering low-income uninsured adults with insurance – to present some surprising findings on what health insurance does – and does not – do, and how such results may challenge our thinking about different policy options going forward.

In MedCity News, Jack Hooper, founder and CEO at Take Command, presents a bipartisan health insurance program as the answer to unpredictable renewals. “Every year, HR and finance leaders play the lottery when it comes to their health insurance costs. Unpredictable renewal rates on their group plans can wreak havoc on a company’s budget, often causing them to choose less expensive plans that don’t meet the needs of their employees — or pass on the extra expenses to their workforce. What many of these HR and finance leaders don’t realize is that a bipartisan health insurance program — built off President Obama’s 21st Century Cures Act but expanded through executive order by President Trump — can help companies escape this renewal risk and maintain consistent health insurance costs.” Check the link in the comments to read the article in full.

Firstly, this event was incredibly tragic and evil. Secondly, “Americans generally say they’re pretty happy with their health insurance, according to survey data from health policy research organization KFF — unless they’re sick. Those with “fair” or “poor” health are nearly twice as likely to be displeased with their insurance compared to those with “good” health.” Because those in good health are not using it! 🙄 This is why advocacy and guidance is vital to the employee experience and satisfaction with any employer sponsored health plan. This is exactly why Rise Benefit Solutions has teamed with Amaze Health. The health insurance experience does not have to suck.
