I am challenged by the continuing assault on artists for the views they express in their work. In the case of comedians, such as Rob Schneider, the art is comedy and its performance. I understand that some people are offended, but as Rowan Atkinson of "Mr. Bean" fame said, "free speech without the right to offend is not free speech at all." People have the right to not like an artist's work. They have the right, as people did in this case, walk out of the performance. But forcing the hospital to apologize for booking the artist is a step too far - in my opinion. Instead, performances such as these are best used - if you are offended - as stages for public debate, not a demand for apologies or cancellations. We will be all better for it. Let's not focus on wars of culture, but rather identify problems and discuss solutions. Good art raises these questions - which is what Mr. Schneider did. https://lnkd.in/dKKUxebr

Often when an event relies on government or philanthropic funding it's "sustainability" is questioned. More often than not, this questioning comes from an underlying assumption that events should be profitable, or at worst break even prospects that don't rely on public funding. This argument mirrors an argument that was made for years in relation to performing arts facilites. Once they were built, the assumption was that they'd easily be handed over to operators to turn a profit into the sunset. We've long since learned that simply is never the case. Any performing arts centres that deliver for their communities are heavily subsidised by local and/or state government, generally to the tune of $1m+. Today's announcement of Mona Foma ceasing after 16 years is a stark reminder that if we want to enjoy the many and varied benefits of events, we'll have to pay for them, not only by buying tickets, but by being comforable with the fact that they'll likely need heavy subsidising, whether by government or philanthrophy. #events #majorevents #economicimpact #socialimpact https://lnkd.in/eXjCD92N

The paper below is a systematic review of the research exploring social prescribing for children and young people with neurodisability and their families, in a hospital setting. Limited evidence to date suggests potential benefit. And the SPACE pilot, delivered by Ways to Wellness, aims to build on this evidence. Thanks to Anna Basu for coming up with an amazing, innovative idea (and leading this review, along with the rest of the team that's evaluating the SPACE pilot).
