As your Iowa League Of Cities Board President, I invite you to join us on Local Leaders Day this March 6, 2024 for a day to celebrate the great work happening throughout Iowa’s munipalities ✨ Local Leaders Day 2024: The Iowa League of Cities Gathers Leaders to Connect and Share the Needs of Cities Across Iowa Iowa cities of all sizes are asking for fiscal predictability, support for efficient governance, and the freedom to align local decisions with local democracy. Des Moines, IA: On March 6, 2024 local leaders from across Iowa will gather together in Des Moines to connect with legislators, discuss legislative priorities, and share their stories. Speakers representing the cities of Cedar Rapids, Atlantic, Bettendorf, and Seymour will join Monte Wyatt of AddingZEROS and Scott Raecker of the Robert D. and BIllie Ray Center at Drake University to converse on how cities can best support Iowans and plan for the future. Immediately following will be a press conference at the State Capitol. “More than 80% of Iowans live in cities. Cities play a critical role in providing and investing in services that impact the daily lives of Iowans including jobs, medical facilities, parks and residences they call home. We need collaboration from the State to support Home Rule, our ability to meet local needs locally, and plan for the future of our incredible Iowa municipalities.” - Ashley Vanorny, League President and Cedar Rapids Council Member How can Iowa serve and support its cities, from communities of 500 people to 200,000? With 940 cities in Iowa of different sizes and conditions, it can be difficult to craft legislation that lifts up all Iowans. Three commonalities the League has heard are: (1) provide fiscal predictability so cities can make longer-term plans to support their citizens; (2) support efficient governance by allowing space for collaboration and innovation; and (3) protect the freedoms to align local decisions with local democracy. Local Leaders Day will host mayors, council members, city staff members, and others to share and discuss current conditions and future needs for Iowa’s cities. Local Leaders Day 2024 March 6, 2024, 8 AM - 2 PM Embassy Suites by Hilton Des Moines Downtown https://lnkd.in/ggxUZyHe Press Conference with Cedar Rapids Council Member and Iowa League of Cities Board President Ashley Vanorny at 1:15 PM on the Capitol Steps.

📢 In a series of groundbreaking decisions, the Supreme Court has boldly redefined the scope and power of the "administrative state," signaling a pivotal shift in the balance of power within the federal government. Katten’s Financial Markets and Regulation team published an advisory that delves deep into the consequences of the Court's actions. The decisions in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, SEC v. Jarkesy, and Corner Post, Inc. v. Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System are more than legal precedents; they reimagine the relationship between administrative agencies, Congress and the Courts. The removal of Kevin McCarthy from the speakership following the passage of the funding bill, Donald Trump’s name become among the potential candidates for the speakership in replacement of McCarthy. The speakership is one of the most powerful political offices in American politics as the Speaker of the House has the power to decide which bills are voted and when, and to control committee assignments, which give them significant influence over the legislative process. While Donald Trump could technically be elected on the premise that there is no constitutional requirement for the Speaker of the House to necessarily be a member of Congress, his election remains somewhat of a long shot for various practical political reasons. Moreover, the fact that Donald Trump is not an ideological political leader does not guarantee that if he were Speaker of the House, he would preserve and uphold conservative principles over making political deals to satisfy both parties. No. Think about it: -- Our public history spaces are underfunded and struggling. -- Too many young people are disengaged from a past that feels irrelevant. -- Vital stories of marginalized communities remain untold. This anniversary can be a turning point. So let's invest in the kind of truth-telling that most members of this Congress would oppose, supporting public history projects that uncover and share overlooked narratives. The 250th should push us towards a more just and accurate understanding of ourselves. I have no confidence that this sort of funding would even begin to meet that challenge. #publichistory #nationbuilding #realhistory #honesthistory #publichistorypractice

The latest piece on my Substack, provoked by a typically insightful but infuriating article by Simon Jenkins, challenges liberals to get real about the reasons for the rise of populist politicians and the very real possibility of a second term for Donald Trump. https://lnkd.in/e_QPcqex
