April 1, 2024 marked the conferral date for my third college degree. As a first generation college student, getting a degree seemed too daunting a task to accomplish more times than not. Now, almost ten years to the date that I received my very first degree, I can proudly say that being an MBA grad makes me a 3x degree recipient.
Making the decision to attend college at all is a big deal, but for those of us stepping into something no one in our family has done before, it holds a special weight. Statistically, only 21% of people whose parents didn’t go to college even make the choice to go. Of that 21% that do go, only 27% go on to obtain a bachelors degree. Of that 27% of first-gen students that get an undergrad degree, only 35% go on to get a graduate degree. Wow.
It might be just another set of statistics for some, but for me, it signifies so much more. Each degree highlights the strength, courage and perseverance it took to tackle something brand new. Even more than that, though, it shows that it doesn’t matter who didn’t do it before you, as long as you do it today.
10 years ago, GMC - Georgia Military College gave me my first degree, and now American Military University has given me both my undergrad and graduate degree. What a journey.
