If you've been feeling jaded about the world, here's a talk that Jonathan Marinaro and I gave (and the audience contributed to mightily!) at MSPGeek, Inc.'s #MSPGeekCon this past year. Bottom line? Regardless of where you sit politically and socially, regardless of where you live, of your socioeconomic status, of your education or experience...the only way that we can make the world that we deserve, that our children deserve, that our world deserves, is to not sit idly by. The only way that any of us wins is if we all win. It's our job to take pain and hurt and frustration and let it make us soft and curious and hopeful. To dare to hope, to dare to believe that we can make it through. Today is the last day in the USA for early voting. Tuesday is Election day for President of the United States (and a variety of amendments, and local and state officials). But don't let it end there. Read up on your local elected officials and see how you can volunteer and help those in your community. Anyone can build a starship, but it takes a democracy to build a federation.

Mayor Craig Greenberg today announced next steps toward the creation of a new public-private partnership to lead economic development in Louisville. Based on national best practices, the Louisville Economic Development Alliance (LEDA) will lead business attraction and expansion efforts, create a new citywide brand, and convene partners around talent development, small business and entrepreneur development, finance and bonding, and policy analysis, research, and advocacy. The organization will be additive and complementary to the work of our partners in Louisville and in the region. https://lnkd.in/gg354kF5

In my conversation with Mayor Steven L. Reed of Montgomery, Alabama, we dove into how cities like his are using innovative tools and partnerships to bridge gaps in housing, economic development, and racial disparities. Mayor Reed shared how his administration is tapping into federal resources and ensuring local instruments like CDFIs and tax credits are optimized to attract private investment. His approach highlights the critical role of the private sector in turning visionary ideas into actionable progress, particularly in mid-sized cities with limited state support. This discussion underscores a key truth: meaningful progress takes intentionality, partnerships, and a willingness to think creatively about solutions. Catch the full conversation with Mayor Reed on Shape The Deal Season 2 on YouTube, and hear firsthand how Montgomery is shaping a new future. https://lnkd.in/eA9gZfr7

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT: Dig Where You Stand is now officially a community interest company! This is a massive milestone for us. Until now we have had to rely on other institutions to hold our money and manage admin, which has meant being bound to their schedules, bureaucratic systems and order of priorities. As a CIC we become more autonomous and can take greater ownership of our mission to deliver archival and racial justice. We are grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this point. It is your support that has given us the drive and the daring to take the next step forward. We see this as an important milestone for South Yorkshire too. A new global majority led organisation is here in Sheffield, with an explicit focus on racial justice. Formalising as a CIC marks a commitment to you. Now that we are an official organisation we intend to operate in a way that befits the internationalist, working-class politics of Sven Lindqvist, whose book Gräv där du står (or “Dig Where You Stand”) inspires and gives name to our work. We will be working internally to create an organisation that meets the demands of the communities we serve. We hope you will join us for the next phase of this exciting journey - believe there is a lot more to come from us in 2025 and beyond. In these uncertain times for social media we urge you to sign up to our mailing list so you don’t miss out on any future announcements: https://lnkd.in/eGMaUHPH More to come very soon. 1x
