The UK government is placing a big bet on Cambridge. Michael Gove, the Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recently announced a series of initiatives aimed at unlocking the city's full potential, particularly in the area of medical research and life sciences. "Cambridge is one of the UK's most prized assets," Gove declared. The city is already home to the prestigious Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Europe's leading centre for medical research. But the government sees an opportunity to supercharge this hub of innovation. A key player in this plan is the Cambridge Delivery Group, chaired by Peter Freeman. This group is tasked with putting the government's vision for Cambridge into action. Their strategy focuses on two key areas: growth and sustainability. Growth will be driven by "enabling and accelerating key developments" at the Biomedical Campus, while ensuring green spaces are protected. Improved transport links and access to essential services are also part of the equation. Funding is being allocated to support this growth. A £7.2 million investment will enhance local transport schemes to improve connectivity for the Biomedical Campus. Additionally, a £3 million boost will go towards developing long-term plans for the site. But the government's ambitions go beyond the immediate. Recognising the national significance of Cambridge's life sciences sector, they're looking to fast-track the expansion of this "foremost UK life sciences cluster." A newly formed growth company will play a crucial role in facilitating collaboration between key stakeholders at the Biomedical Campus. This collaboration will focus on "coherent enhancement, intensification and expansion" of the campus. One of the growth company's top priorities will be tackling barriers to expansion. This includes accelerating the development of housing near the campus, with a focus on providing affordable options for those working there. The government's commitment to Cambridge is a clear signal of the city's importance as a hub for innovation. By fostering a collaborative environment and investing in key infrastructure, they hope to unlock even greater scientific breakthroughs and solidify Cambridge's position as a global leader in life sciences. #Cambridge #growth #lifesciences

I had the privilege of presenting at the annual RAISE Network (Researching, Advancing & Inspiring Student Engagement) conference. It was great to share insights from my work on the INSPIRE research project, titled “Student-Led Development of the Physiology Curriculum in MBBS Medicine at the Hull York Medical School”. The presentation format was new to me and was organised as campfire conversations. This provided a more relaxed atmosphere, allowing for a productive Q+A session. I found some of the questions surrounding positionality and inclusion thought-provoking, giving me a lot to talk about with my peers on the project. The feedback on my talk included a very encouraging comment from a Quality Enhancement and Standards Specialist at the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education on how the project is an example of best practice in HE, additionally suggesting that we contact the University's local Quality Assurance team to share this with them. Engaging with individuals in diverse roles across higher education – from quality assurance professionals to student support staff – offered me a broader perspective on student engagement. In addition to the campfire conversations, the conference had some incredible keynote speakers. The MedRace committee from the University of Leicester delivered a compelling talk on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in medical schools and education. The team’s work on developing surgical scrub caps better suited to braided or locked hair and one designed for people who wear hijabs was encouraging and positive. They spoke about how they created student-led microaggression and bystander training sessions which on reflection allow for a more relatable and engaging way to teach these important topics. Dr. Iwi Ugiagbe-Green's opening keynote focused on the important themes of systemic and institutionalised discrimination in education. It highlighted how systems in education have unfair rulesets that often create barriers for students with non-normative identities. This talk introduced me to the concept of the myth of meritocracy and the idea of a hidden curriculum frequently inaccessible to those without an implicit understanding of educational systems, from secondary schools to higher education. I was left reflecting on this statement: “Equity work should seek to fix the system (that sets the rules) - not focus on 'fixing the student'”. I want to extend my thanks to the team at RAISE and the University of Leicester for inviting us to present at this conference. #RAISE24

Tonight’s #ADVEiSCC dinner speakers are discussing the recent The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine report, Supporting Family Caregivers in STEMM: A Call to Action. The report, which has been highlighted in articles in Nature and Science, describes the ways in which the labor and contributions of caregivers are often invisible and undervalued, with a specific focus on the academic STEMM ecosystem. The report reviews policies and practices that support caregivers, locally and nationally, and describes best practices in policy implementation and design. It also highlights innovative practices and offers actionable recommendations to higher education institutions, public and private funders, and the federal government. https://lnkd.in/dp2ZjgR8

Amazing update on the Cleveland Innovation District, which is already seeing huge success just three years after its launch! The CID was launched in 2021 as a collaborative partnership between government and some of the most innovative and important institutions in Northeast Ohio - Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland State University, and the three major hospitals, Cleveland Clinic, The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH), and University Hospitals. The results just three years in are extremely encouraging! The Cleveland Clinic's projects have already created 2,000 new jobs related to the CID, double the goal set in 2021. University Hospitals have exceeded their ten year job creation targets by 80%. All three hospitals have partnered with startups and leading companies to forge the next generation of Healthcare solutions. MetroHealth helped launch Ovatient, a new start up, and partnered with AT&T to address digital disparities in health. UH partnered with Oxford University in England to launch a cutting edge accelerator to find cures for sieves. Cleveland Clinic launched groundbreaking new partnerships with Canon on medical imaging and with IBM on Quantum Computing. Over on the education side, CSU saw a 27% increase in enrollment in 16 key programs over the 2019 (pre-pandemic) baseline. CWRI added 100 new faculty positions and is approaching its goal of growing its research portfolio to $600 million. It's a game changer for our region, and we are just getting started! The Cleveland Innovation District shows what is possible when leaders from education, healthcare, government, science, and business work together to build an ecosystem where innovation, research, and entrepreneurship can thrive. I am so excited to see what the future holds for the CID and its partners; with this kind of innovation, the future is bright! Be sure to check out this article from UH on the progress they, their partners at the universities, and their colleagues at the Clinic and Metro, have made. It's extraordinary!
Since the Cleveland Innovation District launched in 2021, the founding institutions have made significant progress, including exceeding many of the targets set by the Ohio Department of Development and JobsOhio. Collectively, the institutions participating in this $500 million public-private initiative have created more than 2,600 jobs, spent nearly $1.2 billion on research and innovation, commenced construction of two new research facilities, created dedicated research space comprising more than 550,000 square feet, and awarded more than 7,300 degrees and certificates to support workforce development. “The Cleveland Innovation District’s progress over the last three years has been remarkable," said Governor Mike DeWine. "Ohio is a world leader in innovative healthcare and research, and I’m confident we’ll continue to see life-changing medical advancements from the talented teams that are part of the Cleveland Innovation District.” Through the Cleveland Innovation District (CID), the partners -- Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland State University, The MetroHealth System (Cleveland, OH) and University Hospitals -- in collaboration with the Ohio Department of Development and JobsOhio aim to contribute $3 billion to the regional economy by 2030. They plan to achieve this by generating 20,000 direct and indirect jobs that will result from increased investment in research and product innovation, construction spending and furthering the educational profile of our Northeast Ohio community. "It has been an immense privilege to witness the remarkable synergy among our anchor partners,” said Cliff A. Megerian, MD, FACS, Current Chair of the Cleveland Innovation District and CEO of University Hospitals. “Together, we have coalesced into a dynamic force, achieving significant milestones since the launch in 2021. The progress we've made underscores our collective commitment to elevating the region. I look forward to continuing this extraordinary journey, working hand-in-hand with our partners and the entire community, as we propel the Cleveland Innovation District to even greater heights.” To read about the milestones achieved by the five institutions, visit https://lnkd.in/gR77fkVY Office of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, Jon Husted #collaborationiskey #innovation #economicdevelopment #strengthinnumbers
